Re: [Digital BW] Variable Tone Inks - Update

Re: [Digital BW] Variable Tone Inks - Update

I sure agree! Paul has done wonders with those curves. Piezo quality and
variable cold tones. You can even use the magenta epson slider to get
between two curves if you want! I find that using the Neutral curve with +20
Magenta (The toning position ink, which is very blue) matches exactly the
beautiful ink color I got with Lyson Small Gamut inks when I tried them.
(They had a Beautiful tone, but a little too much metamerism, and you could
see the dots).

With the new Photo Matte Legion Paper and Pauls set of curves, I think the
Holy Grail is here. Someone tested it with a pH pen, and found it acid free
and pH neutral, front and back. So it's looking great!

Thanks Paul!

Jerry

Mike great news! And congrats to Paul. I'am dying to hear more!
How does the neutral tone compare to piezo? Is the warm tone goal to be like
piezo or warmer?
After Printing with Piezo myself for over a year everything looks cold to me
too, which makes the varible tone a little scarey at this point. I do not
have the Varible tone inks loaded
in My 7000 yet but I'am almost ready. Are these curves paper sensitive?
meaning a change of paper throws everything off?
I'am just taking some time to explore the standard set of Hextones, see what
I can do before I explore Variable tone land.
I would think the varible tone set would be less prone to any shift in tone a
few weeks down the road.
Good news about the 500ml tanks also, Thanks for the report.

After a marathin session with Paul Roark, the Neutral Curve looks
really good (my opinion, hope Paul agrees). The Warm Curve is at mid-
stage and needs a bit of work.

At first I though that the neutral curve was just "so cold" it was
blue. I guess after printing with Piezo for the past year everything
looks cold to me. But, I just finished printing an image with the
last iteration of the curve and I must say that I am truly impressed.

Lovely continuous tones, smooth textures, and no sign of dots.

Steve,

The warm end is a lot like Piezo, perhaps a bit warmer. Paul can provide more details as he has been working with these inks far longer than anyone. The cool tone is very cool/blue. Jerry Olson is a blue kinda guy. He like cool, cool, cold! He can give you some input on the colder side of things.

The curves right now are being developed for Epson Archival matte as the base. We will then adjust them for other papers as well. Paul has indicated that for the most part, a bit of tweaking is all that is necessary with transfer curves once the base curve is finished.

Agreed, AND you can use the epson magenta slider to add more or less blue to a curve to fine tune it to perfection. I prefer the Neutral curve now, with +20 Magenta in the toner slider (The magenta slider controls the amount of blue ink to the print). This tone is perfect for me. Not blue, but
colder than neutral. a Beautiful tone indeed.

Brrr, I feel a chil in the air. Personally I prefer the "MW" (Medium
Warm) curve which I feel is neutral. That is why this system is so
great. Everyone can taylor the image tone to their own likes.

Epson Presentation Matte paper

2001-10-26 by Reinier van der Ryst

Hi all,
I can get a few rolls of Epson Presentation Matte very cheaply.
How does it compare with EAM. I use VM inks and EAM presently.
Thanks
