BO printing recommendation

BO printing recommendation

2006-06-14 by Andre

Hi,

I need an A4 printer for black only printing using MIS PK. Which one
would you recommend : Epson C88 or Epson R220 ?

Thanks for your input.

I have the 220 - it's very simple to set up and use. I believe you'll
find many people recommending it in this group.

Hi Brian,

Thanks for the recommendation.

I have a few questions if I may:

1- I've read that the B.O. mode is not always available on the print
menu of the R220. Can you confirm that it is ?

2- The R220 is a dye ink printer. In B.O. mode, is the black cart the
only cart from which ink is used or do you know if any of the color
inks are used as well?

3- Can PKN (photo black) be used in B.O. mode with glossy papers and
are the results as good as Matte Black (K) on matte papers ?

4- Have you used color pigment inks in the other cart positions and if
so what are the results for color printing.

TIA,
André

Roger - I'm glad to be able to answer some questions instead of asking
them - I've probably hold the recent record for most questions asked!!

I'm pretty sure BO mode is always available on the R220. I have not
seen or heard of an instance of it being unavailable. I believe Epson
is disabling it on higher end printers but in that case it is still
possible with a RIP.

The black cart is the only one used for printing however the color
cartridges will be used up slowly in cleaning cycles, etc.

I have only printed a few BO prints on glossy paper and I was happy
with the results however someone else may be better able to answer
this one. You will probably have to experiment with different paper
type settings to get the best results.

I have not printed a color image with the PK (or MK) black in the
printer in addition to the color cartridges. I don't know why it
wouldn't work unless there is an issue mixing pigment and dye inks.

Hope this helps!

Apparently the European driver version does not have the BO option,
but the USA driver is downloadable from Epson and works fine (so I've
been told).

My son just told me he saw an Epson C86 at our local
Radio Shack for $49.99. So if anyone is interested in
one for a great price, check your local RS!

Thanks to all who responded.

Tonight I bought and installed the R220. Made a few B.O. prints with
the OEM inks to get a feel of the printer. Also placed an order with
MIS for PK ink and cart.

It's a fast printer which is pretty simple to use especially in B.O.
mode. I'll be using it to print 6.5" x 8.667" images on 8.5 x 11" paper.

Cheers,
André
