The MIS UT-2 inks ARE in fact pigment inks, and by most accounts very
"archival", depending upon what paper(s) you are printing on..
My advice base on personal experience would be for you to first try a set
of "filled" carts from MIS, and use Paul Roark's curves..I think you will
really like the results..If that works out for you, get a set or two of
their re-fillable "spongeless" carts, and buy your ink in 4 oz bottles from
them..
IMHO, stay away from any CFS/CIS systems..They all work pretty good for a
while, but then tend to clog up with remedies of very mixed results..(I've
owned 4 of them..)..You may also want to consider the QTR (quad tone rip)
from Roy Harrington, which only costs $50.00 and has a really easy graphic
interface....

Good Luck and above all ahve some FUN!!

Subject: [Digital BW] UT-2 inks with the Epson 1280 start-up

Howdy folks, I just signed up with your group and LOOK FORWARD to
learning and sharing info with all! I just purchased a new 1280
(hasn't even arrived yet) and want to use it dedicated to black and
white. My other printer is the R1800, for color. While surfing last
night, I came across MIS and the UT-2 information on their website and
am considering this set-up for BW prints, mostly portraits. Thinking
out loud: I have never had a dye based printer before; only after
purchasing the 1280 online LAST NIGHT, I learned that there are some
issues of permanance with the ink/paper combinations. While up to 3:30
last night researching this, MIS and the UT-2 inks kept popping up.
And today, while on Nikonians, I learned of your discussion group, so
here I am. I have read a few of the posts and am wondering if this
would be the way to go for BW printing. My main concern now is
permanence. This is a mouthful I know, but I need your help!! Thanks,
many times over!!!

Thanks for the advise, Edward.

Do you have any experience printing on Ilford papers with the 1280/UT-2 combo? I have a sample packet of their Galerie smoth gloss on the way from inkjetart.com and am thinking of trying the pearl finish also.
