R2400 ABW toning variability question

R2400 ABW toning variability question

2006-07-20 by Scott Jones

Hi all,

I am wondering if anyone has had this experience. I have been
printing and noticed that my aRGB to ABW driver prints have been
having a slight green cast for some time. I have been compensating
for this by using the toning wheel to move toward the magenta (eg
6h/-3v). Well, I just changed over to a new light magenta cartridge
and whammo, all the prints were looking quite magenta and now 0h/0v
looks fairly neutral on my prefered paper of EPSG where as before it
had a slight green cast. I am sending aRGB files to the ABW driver
with no color management from Photoshop as I always do. Also I have
run nozzle checks frequently and there never has been any problem.

So Have people noticed that inks can loose their intensity in the
cartridges? Mine probably has been in the machine for 6 months max
if I had to guess. Can dye lots be this variable. Any thoughts from
our fellow r2400 users? Will I have to readjust my toning everytime
I switch a cartridge? Thanks for any help you can give.

If your carts have been in the machine for 6 months that's an indication
of infrequent use. That leads me to think this is probably pigment
settling. Next time it happens pull the carts out and shake them.
Problem should go away.

After 6 mos it may very well be some settling, as Bruce suggested.
According to past threads re settling in other printers (typically the
larger models without moving carts), it tends to be the magenta that
does it.

However, I've had a 2400 for almost a year now under regular and
frequent use, and have noticed a slight shift from one color cart to
another (I do ABW only). I have attributed it to production batch
differences because I go through carts fairly often (I've averaged
about 1.6 carts/month over the past year) and I doubt settling would
be an issue. In addition, I've noticed these slight color shifts
(nothing as dramatic as what you described) when changing LC and LM as
well, which are much more frequently changed (about 3:1 over C and M).

Regards,
Clayton

Clayton, thank you so much for your typical fast and generous
answer. My light magenta cart probably was not in there for 6 mo,
but I have shaken all carts and with the new light magenta cart in
place, all the toning is back to normal. On EPSG I think the tone is
a tad cool/greenish. You and I seem to have the same curse in being
able to distinguish extremely slight shade differences in the
magenta/green scale. So Now I compensate with 2h/-1v on the toning
wheel.

Thanks for your help and I will now shake all carts if they have
been sitting for awhile!
