Reproducing the tone of LensWork
2006-08-14 by ajberky
I noted in the forum that there seemed to be some interest in copying the tonal qualities of photo exhibited on the web or in a magazine like LensWork. I would direct you to a site epaperpress.com and in the section on photography there is a wealth of information including under the Black & White heading a subsection called 'Copy A Tone'. The author says its a simple technique, but it takes some finesse - and the results are great. Of course you will need a well calibrated monitor so that WYSIWYG from the image with the tone you desire. And if you scan a toned image there may be some tinkering with the curve to realize the best outcome. I have tried both web and scanned images and printed with the Epson R2400 and color profiles for the papers I use - Ilford Galerie Smooth Gloss and Smooth Pearl, and will try tonight with my brand new sheets of Museo Silver Rag and report back if there is any interest. I will also place on my website in a section called TONED IMAGES a few images that I created this way and it should serve as a starting point for those interested. I will have to upload one or more of these images to the forum photos section as my website does not permit capturing an image to download. Please let me know if there is any interest.
