When you go view/show/all ...

what are the little 01 and wave in a box located in the upper left 
corner for?

Think I'll look through the book in the meantime.

Sometimes I'm such a kid, ask the question THEN go to the dictionary.

They are for viewing "slices" which seems to be the ability to 
partition within an image, another layer manipulation concept - I 
guess.

Sounds as if you're seeing the slice number.
