They represent analog, color specific density scales for each color channel.

They mean something. Its just not something directly translatable to color 
values; its for other purposes.

Yes, pretty much. An analog densitometer only offers density values, in one 
or another density scale. It does not offer color data, and (a question I 
receive about once a week) you can't use the data from it to build ICC profiles, or 
do other color related things.
