And the (Dmax) Winner Is....

And the (Dmax) Winner Is....

2007-01-15 by Steven Karafyllakis

I just got around to testing the RC papers that came in the Lumijet
sample pack.... One in particular, the "True Pearl" gave me a 2.57 with
the K3 inks on the 3800, at the 'normal' settings. As comparison, Epson
Semi-matte produced a 2.36 at the same settings.

Does anybody know anything about the stability of this paper?

Regards,

Steve Karafyllakis

Steve,

Did you like the paper in aspects other than Dmax? Bronzing, GD? Is
it warm or cool?

I wonder how the Dmax changes with dry down. I have noticed Dmax drop
in the range of 0.1 units overnight with K3 PK loaded on my 4000 with
most RC papers including Innova F and Crane Silver Rag. But when you
start at 2.5, that drop is not consequential at all, especially when
it is more than regained with GLOP overcoat.

Happy New Year!

Shilesh

Shilesh;

Initial reading was after a good blast with a hair dryer... 3 hrs or
drying later its down to a mere 2.53. I can live with that.

The surface has a very fine-toothed pearl/semimatte finish, not too
reflective, easy to live with. It's on the warm side: Lab readings on
the white were:
L= 94.25  a= 1.37  b= -4.22

No bronzing, but the Epson inks showed GD, being glossier than the
paper surface. The MIS inks had almost no GD at all, but also had a
lower dmax: 2.39 after 24hrs of dry-up

I'll put it out in the torture window tomorrow,& keep you posted.

And a Happy New Year to you!

Wonder how this paper compares to my favorite paper: Innova Fiba-Gloss F...

David;

I measured the warm version of that paper a while back; uncoated it
gave me a 2.5 A day later I gave it a couple light coats of MIS Gloss
Optimizer, and a few hours later it measured a 2.85, not only the
highest reading I've gotten, but probably the biggest shift as well.
Now, a couple months later its down to ...only 2.74!!!

And of course the rag paper looks and feels like a much higher quality
product, at least while its in your hand. Not sure how much difference
that would make behind glass.

The RC paper is also very inexpensive, about .47 US a sheet. But we
don't have any idea how it will hold up at this point, I wouldn't buy
too much of it, or trust it to archival applications just yet.

Regards

Hmm. Steve, I presume these numbers are for Fiba Glossy F Warm. With
the "cool" version of the paper and my 4000 loaded with 4800 PK, I
have not hit these astronomically high numbers after GLOP. I control
ink density with QTR, and the GLOP I use is from another source.
Maybe I should try the MIS GLOP? Maybe the 3800 dither also helps?

Shilesh;

That test patch was done a couple months back on Clayton's 2400 with
Epson PK. And yes, they struck me as being astronomical too. I don't
have any more on hand or I'd try it again just to see if I can repeat
the results. That result made me wonder if my nice new spectro was
out-of-whack, but everything else it comes up with seems reasonable,
so...

Ah, I see, it was on a 2400. Did you use ABW? I am going to have to
try the paper on my 2400.
