[Digital BW] Newbie Hello

[Digital BW] Newbie Hello

Hi to all.

I'm new to this group but glad to be here. I'm a full time Fire-fighter with a Commercial photo buisness. I have not done allot of printing but would like to do more printing on my own (b/w & color) for my book as well as fine art work. I won't be able to dedicate a printer to only b/w unfortunatly perhaps in the future. My only first quistion is if some of you have the new canon 5000? What are the thoughts on this printer? I know epson has had the market for a long time and make great printers. But I'm leaning toward the canon for the added color range and not having to switch blacks. I went to a deminstration of the printer and of course they showed some great prints and printed some great prints, but I expect that at those events. So I guess I wondered what some real world experince might be?

I've done allot of b/w printing in the past (in the dark of course) and I know it won't be the same but I'm stoked to get a printer and get started with my own work instead of always using a lab. I would like to only use a lab when I need one, not all the time.

Sorry for the long post. Thanks for any thoughts.

Greg

Hi Greg,

Here's two links that may help in your decision regarding this printer.

I've been going around on this 5000 printer vs. a 4800 myself.Michael
Reichman's LL review does make it sound pretty good, however
personally I'm not going to buy a printer based on one review from a
guy whos work I've never seen. His review of the 4800 with K3 ink using
ABW mode was pretty discouraging, yet I just heard an interview with
John Sexton saying He was pretty impressed with K3 and ABW mode.Sexton
is somebody whos b&w work I not only respect, but also own. With the
4800 I can always use Cones Piezotones K7, or MIS's ink, but I've
emailed both about 5000 versions and have gotten no commitment. The
only 5000 sample I've seen was an 8x10 botanical shot and printed by a
Calumet manager (who's an excellent fine art photographer f64 style)
He personally bought the 5000 over the 4800 He was that impressed He
said, but upon inspecting this print He was so proud of, there was a
definate color cast looking at it any angle but straight on.It was
printed on HM velvet fine art.I havent dismissed the 5000 yet as a
purchase option, I'm just still a little nervous and need to see some
more b&w samples, which for me have been impossible to find.I too
would like to hear from especially b&w fine art photographers who do
sales and gallery exhibitions, who have used both printers, and hear
their thoughts......................Chris

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
