PremierArt Hot Press & Dmax

PremierArt Hot Press & Dmax

2007-01-19 by Terry Ritz

I was intrigued by Paul's posts regarding PremierArt Hot Press and
encouraged that more recent samples have better Dmax. When I placed my last
order for colour inks from MIS I had them add a sample pack of 205g 8.5x11.
It appears their stock is older, as I'm only getting a Dmax of 1.55.

The paper colour is exactly what I'm looking and that, coupled with the
ultra smooth surface, would nicely compliment my Innova papers. However,
before picking up some 13x19 stock I would appreciate your advice on where I
should go to ensure I get newer stock.

Thanks,

Terry.

I got a pack of 8-1/2x11 Premier Art Hot Press from MIS a couple of
weeks ago. I am getting a dMax of 1.61 with MIS UT-R2 in an R200.
Still a little low, but not a showstopper.

I'm using the 325 gsm version of the Hot Press in old photo reproductions
and getting an excellent dmax. I'm also getting outstanding blacks from the
less expensive and brightened "Matte BW" (a new name for their dual sided
210 gsm alpha cellulose matte paper). I use the Matte BW in roll form for
most display now. (I was never able to get the old 205 and my 7500 printing
well. My previous favorite display paper was PermaJet Alpha, but there is
no such paper available in the U.S. any more.)

I still think the Hot Press 205 is a very good value for a cotton paper.
However, all I expected from the old 205 was a dmax with a density of about
1.60.

My intent was ultimately to move to the 325 gsm version, after testing
with the 205. I will be using the paper to reproduce an artist's
pencil work and paper base colour is very important. He wants a warm
tone with a smooth surface, with the tone being similar to the that of
Innova's Soft Texture Art.

Is the 325 paper base the same colour as the 205?

Thanks,

Terry.

I have not noticed a significant color difference between the 205 and 325.
I did notice a small profiling difference, so the coating does appear to
have been changed.

I have trouble feeding even 250gsm paper into my R200 and R800, so I'm
sure I wouldn't have a good time with the 325gsm Hot Press. Do you
know anything about this paper, available here :
http://www.atlex.com/premier/fine-art-270.htm

 PremierArt Smooth Fine Art (Hot Press) 270 - 270gsm 16mil - Smooth
100% cotton rag, natural white mould made, acid free, lignin free,
with No Optical Brighteners, Archival Museum Quality, water resistant,
instant dry, coated single side. Dye or Pigment inks.

This *sounds* like a 270gsm version of the same paper, and it is
very inexpensive.

I'm printing it now in the 220 with no problems. I do hand feed each sheet,
giving it a little pressure to get it started. With me it's the 2400 that
is more of a problem, in part because I do not have a place for it that
facilitates the straight through path.

No, I have never used it.

Yes, it does sound like the same basic paper type.

Re: [Digital BW] Re: PremierArt Hot Press & Dmax

2007-01-20 by john eckenrode

Howdy,

I use the Premier Art Hot Press 270 a lot, the natural finish version. I mostly use it for color where I get a 1.70 DMax using a 2200 using a profile I had made at Ink Jet Art. The paper is "floppy" compared to the 325 which is pretty stiff. The 270 definitely feeds into the printer easier in my experience. It is only single sided and for some reason the packaging does not say which side is up, it is easy to figure out tho.

I also use it a bit with the Piezotone K7 split tone setup on my other 2200. I used QTR to create my own curves, but I only get 1.62-1.63 Dmax with that setup. Despite the lowish DMax it does print nicely.

So I like the paper quite a bit, it is pretty much my exclusive color paper, and one of a few papers in my B&W stable. Plus you simply can't beat the price. (I get it through Atlex which is back ordered as of yesterday.)

Right On
John E
