On the topic of printer / paper profiles for color or b&w does anyone have recommendations on the use of PrintFix Pro 2 vs. Gretag Eye One Design or Photo? I see the Gretag costs more but I only want to spend the money one time and want to develop a good working system that will last for some time. Thanks, Gary W.

Gary, I spent some time using Gretag Eye one and Profile Maker 4.0 at a studio that I worked at. It produced fine results but at 4000.00, I needed to let it slide for a while before I joined the personal control arena. I was very happy to see the product that Color Vision was putting out and at a reasonable price. I would think that there will be other changes that you'll need to worry about before either the PFP or Gretag are shot. Unlike Wilhelm years, it is hard to put an abuse rating on equipment to see how they perform under duress. Eric, We must be talking about different models. The Gretag Eye One design I am referring to is about $1000 for the the Design and $1500 for the Photo.. The Color Vision Pro2 is around $600. I have read read info on all systems but it is hard for me to know which one to buy. I am looking to calibrate my monitor and create paper printer profiles and want to create a good working system. I would hate to think I was trying to save a few dollars buying a lesser model only to want to trade up in a year. Do you or anyone else have recommendations on these systems? Gary W.

Gary, The experience I had with Profile Maker 4.0 was several years back. This has been one of the best changes in color management; the introduction of lower priced tools. The probe is probably still the same for the Eye One but packaged with a less extensive profiling software. I wouldn't be surprised to see more HP type built in profile designs. Is there a dealer near you where you can go try them? Or someone close by that you know that has one? Sometimes it is a matter of how well you interface with the equipment and software. I haven't seen any reports about the ability of the tools to measure light better than the other. Both spectros have very similar accuracy specs; in fact, if I read the color patches on a ColorChecker with both, the average difference is less than one Delta-E 94, which means pretty much visually identical. So choose based on features you need (PrintFIX PRO 2 black and white fuctions, EyeOne Design CMYK functions, whatever) and price. Be sure that you check in detail what types of profiles the EyeOne makes, and from how many patches; the bottom end software reads only minimal patch targets, and is really requires upgrading for serious work. My advice: Do not under any circumstance by the Design and expect it to make a decent printer profile! I own it (bought it only for the spectro), and the 45 patches that it uses will not make a decent printer profile on any paper that I tried. You should be able to use the spectro with the free Argyll CMS software, but I haven't tried it yet. If you find a used Design for a really good price, then it might be worth adding the full RGB or CMYK module to make real profiles.

Thanks for the advice on the Gretag Eye One Design. Does anyone have any recommendations the Gretag Eye One Photo or the Color Vision Pro 2 for making paper profiles in Black and White and color? Gary W.

In the absence of a reply from anyone more knowledgeable I'll try to help with your question. I have the Eye One and am considering purchasing PrintFix Pro 2 for its Black & White profiling capabilities. Sadly I think the answer as to which one is best is that it depends on exactly how you are intending to print, with or without a RIP. If you are going to use a RIP then I suggest you choose whichever spectro integrates best with the RIP software, that was why I chose the Eye One because it integrates with both Bowhaus IJC and with QTR. Similarly if your chosen RIP has a CMYK workflow for color then the Eye One would be a good choice (with the appropriate software). If you are not going to use a RIP then I suspect that for color printing the two packages are on a par, however for black and white PrintFix Pro 2 is undoubtedly better as it has additional color charts that allow it to produce specific black and white profiles. This is unique in my experience, certainly amongst the affordable profiling packages. You will find many posts here discussing this functionality posted by C D Tobie. Best of luck with your choice. Gary, > Thanks for the advice on the Gretag Eye One Design. The price is attractive and the un-official support via the colorvision_group at yahoo is impressive. I never had to use the official Colorvision support until today. The new version 2 of PFP is well done with lots of nice functions/tools. The profiles are good - nearly perfect monitor to print matches. I can really recommend it. Keith at http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/ did a quite comprehensive review. Perhaps you look there for a second opinion. All the best, Ronald

Its a matter of how well their color targets, settings, and profiles works for black and white. PrintFIX PRO 2.0 is the only product that specifically includes targets and features for B&W profiles. For an independant review of some, but not all, of these B&W features, take a look at: http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/reviews/printfix_pro_v2.html This also links to a review of the color profiling functions, use of PrintFIX PRO with QTR, and other interesting stuff.
