Newbie Question

Newbie Question

2007-02-05 by Zabi

Hi all,

I have been using OPM with epson inks on an epson 2200, and would like to make the
transition to the MIS UT7 or Peizo inksets. The question is which is the better/easier one to
work with? I'm a traditional Fiber print maker, and would like to come close to the beautiful
tonal range and Deep blacks of Ilford DW FB gloss paper. Obviously quality is more
important then ease of use in choosing the inkset.
I'm hoping to make the transition soon, as I'm preparing a portfolio of images that I made in
Afghanistan for a show in the SF bay area.
Thanks,
Zabi

Newbie Question

2009-01-05 by tduncaneu

First, I apologize for the basic question but I am trying to help my 14
year-old son who has decided to start shooting digital B&W in addition
to color. We have discovered that our Cannon IP6600D does not do B&W
well. We need to get some prints done quickly for an
application/portfolio he is working on.

Should I invest in another printed dedicated to B&W or head out to a
print shop of some sorts? Any suggested links, search terms or other
suggestions would be helpful. Thank you.

The epson 3800 will do a superb job. No printer that i know of is
dedicated to b&w as you need all the colour inks to print b&w, hence
they are always colour as well.

how many prints does he need, and how quickly does he need them? what is your budget?

not to step on his budding interest in learning to do black and white and print, but it might be cheaper in the immediate time to have them printed by someone who has a quick turn around time and knows exactly what needs to be done and how to accomplish it with as little difficulties as possible.

i have heard great things about the 3800 doing very nice black and white prints, but if price is an issue that may not be something you want to invest in at this time.

good luck with his school project.

An option might be print at Costco.
I get good results and a reasonable price.

I think the key is to find a place that is able to print a fairly
neutral B&W (watch for green or magenta color casts) consistently.
Costco use Fuji Frontier and I recommend the "matte" paper (really a
semi-gloss) for B&W. I used to do this using Winkflash.com as they
delivered consistently neutral prints. These days I print everything
myself.

Inkjet printers found in prolabs like the Epson R3800 or R2400 (or
their larger variants) can also achieve this on a wider variety of
papers. Maybe call around and see what your local photo labs or
stores would use to print B&W, what type of paper and what it costs?

If I need a silver print on RC paper, I use Mpix.com. If i want a print on Fiber paper, I use my darkroom.
If you email your B&W to mpix and tell them not to color correct, you'll get a perfect file. Their price is really reasonable and you get a true silver print. Don't go to Costco or any other lab that print B&W on color paper. It is not the same.
Their support is also awesome. You have to email them. No phone support. One of the file I ahd sent was damaged and I did not get the print for a show. I emailed them and got a reply instantly every time I answered back. They shipped me the print overnight at no charge.
Check them out.

TD I would look for a local print shop that does B&W prints. Also, tell
your son to ALWAYS shoot color and convert to B&W post process.
