UV Glass or not?

UV Glass or not?

2007-02-05 by Richard Smallfield

Hi,
I've always framed exhibition prints with plain glass because of the published test results on fade resistance.

But I'm now a bit skeptical about Wilhelm's results on UC inks (and HP 59 inks) and wondered if most people were playing safe by using UV glass for sale prints?

thanks,
Richard

I don't use UV glass. I use acrylic for weight and lack of breaking.

To the extent it's relevant, in my fade tests using fluorescent lights, show
only about a 10% improvement with Premier Art Print Shield, a UV blocker,
whereas the UC "quads" I've made showed about a 30% improvement. I think
the MIS base may have a bit of UV blocker in it, but I'm not sure.

I don't put a lot of cost in the framing because the buyers often don't even
want the frame.

Richard, I sell prints mounted on a suitable substrate and over matte.
Framing is also available but only at the request of the buyer. When I
display prints in frames, I don't use special glass unless the display
conditions require it; too much reflection for example. I do, let the buyer
know about the limitations of the glass. I would only go the extra yard when
the frame becomes part of the piece.
