Epson Advanced B/W

Epson Advanced B/W

2007-02-23 by will gibson

All,

I've recently been printing black and whites thru PShop using an Epson
7800 and the ABW mode. Prints like a jewel, VERY linear with Hahnemuehle
Fine Art Pearl. But in the Printer color management page, the default
for TONE is "Darker". Can anyone give me a plausible reason why? It
definitely does print darker if I forget to switch it back to NORMAL
which is 2 steps back in density. Thrown away 2 prints so far because of
it. The only thing I can think of is that the sales people got in there
and left this "land mine" to make the users screw up and use up more ink
and paper than they need to. Any thoughts about this? I've been trained
over the years to never trust using a PRESET as they revert to default
settings seemingly randomly. Is this a Mac thing or does this sort of
thing happen on Windows too?

Wil, It happened on my 4800 when I first got into the ABW on my PC. It could
be a hold over from the idea that a B&W that lacks depth is more likely to
be seen as a failure than one that is over inked. You might try setting up a
few custom set ups that allow you to push the detail and darken sliders a
bit. Print out a few 100 square patches so that you can really see the
squares as you move the sliders.

Hi Will -

Yes, it's the same in windows and it's a pain in the butt.

Best,

Ted

These settings seem to be the equivalent of the printer gamma settings
in the non-ABW mode. Why Darker is the default I'm not certain, but
it may be because that works pretty well when GG2.2 is used as the
image profile. I use a custom DG18 curve for my image profile and it
works best with the Light setting. I avoid getting trapped by the
defaults by always selecting a saved setting. That puts all the
various controls where I want them with a single operation. Otherwise
it's too much to remember in the midst of working up an image.

Regards,
Clayton

Will;

this may be a good time to learn to trust presets; After I saved a
preset with 'normal' as the density, it has been coming up that way
every time. Makes life much easier!

This question is like asking why they named the 2400 the 2400 or why they
decided to call themselves Epson. Who cares? The default settings work
well and even better with a QTR profile.
