Many scanners add some USM sharpening as a default. Make sure you turn it
off if you want to reduce film ganularity. If you must sharpen, do it
selectively in your image editing program just before you print. Since I
discovered how to turn off the USM in my Imacon Photo (-120 & sharpen on!),
I can get grainless scans.

Enhanced graininess seems to be related to hardware, but increased contrast
is probably a s/w issue. Give Vuescan a try...
