Position of laptop screen

Position of laptop screen

2007-03-12 by Johnny Eades

I have a laptop that I edit my photo work on, and I've noticed the
change in the image depending on the angle of the screen. Does anyone
have a routine that will enable me to set it at the correct tilt so the
image values are correct and will print correctly matched to the
screen. The system is calibrated with SpyderPro and my profiles are
created with PrintFixPro 2.1

Your friend in Photography,

 Johnny

Get an external monitor if you really want things to match your
prints. Laptop screens are only so good.

Johnny, I have mine set to about 100 degrees, perhaps a bit less. I also find
it important to stay in the center for viewing.

Laptops, in order to save battery power, use a narrow band of full brightness
(kind of like how a lighthouse takes a light source, and uses fresnel lens to
turn it into a narrow band aimed out towards the horizon). This means you
should have your eyes perpendicular to a laptop screen to see the right "gamma".
One reason why laptops are not ideal for image editing. I tend to shift my
head up and down until I'm sure I'm in the "sweet zone" before making final
judgements on a laptop screen, if I don't have a calibrated desktop monitor
available at the time.

Is there a product that can reverse this, temporarily, when, for example,
you're trying to show someone else a procedure you're doing on the laptop?
I wonder if there is something like those plastic rear van window "lenses"
that would spread the light.

That would be a fresnel lens, which is what Apple uses to aim all sections of
their large LCDs at the same point for viewing consistancy in the first
place; you are looking for an inverse lens that would spread it all out again. Its
really the vertical direction that is most heavily adjusted, so it would be
more a matter of a 2d lens (a fresnel bar lens) that could be applied to the
screen. It would make it all evenly dim, instead of having a sbright band at
perpendicular and dimmer viewing from other vertical angles. You'd have to have
it designed specificly to compensate for your monitor's banding (rather like
special perscription contact lenses for laptops) and you'd have to calibrate
your monitor with it in place... rather a tricky situation, and it would
probably cause visible banding on screen, from the interaction of the screen pixel
rows and the fresnel lens segments, a Moire effect. There is a product to do the
reverse, to limit horizontal visibility even further for privacy on planes,
etc... so I won't say its impossible.
