I too have used the MIS half-sponge carts with complete satisfaction for 
a year or more.

Initially, I replaced the MIS plugs by drilling out the hole for a 6-32 
thread.  An Allen-head
set screw covered with plastic tape provided a secure, ait-tight, closure.

Eventually, I eliminated the set screw and simply tape the hole being 
careful to clean the adjacent
surface and assure that the tape adheres all around the hole.  Couldn't 
be simpler or faster.

Sometimes when the tape comes off clean, I re-use.  More often I use new 
tape.  At a half-
inch in length, tape cost is not excessive.
