Not a good idea. Though things will no doubt change when a Democrat is
elected President, at the moment the highest income tax rate is 35% (with a
couple irrelevant exceptions). So paying say $1000 for the crushed diamonds
to save a maximum of $350 in taxes isn't a good idea. Better to hold on to
the diamonds, hope they appreciate in value, then contribute them to
charity. Since you didn't create the diamonds you can take a deduction for
their fair market value rather than their cost (with a few more irrelevant
exceptions: - ). In other words, much better to be an investor than an
artist (which I think was Tyler's original point). : - )

Actually Harry. It wouldn't quite be a wash. You would be deducting
all your production cost up front as a business expense on the sale as
well as some proportion as overhead etc just as any other business
would do on a merchandise sale. Since the transactions are totally
independent, you would be able to treat the cash gift as just that and
it would be fully deductible. So you would be able to,in a sense,
double dip, perfectly legally. Your action would have the effect of
causing Uncle Sam to help in the contribution. How's that for a bit of
the butterfly wings/windstorm connection?

Regards
Duane
