Layers and BLending Modes

Layers and BLending Modes

2007-08-03 by zonepeter

In Amadou Diallo's book, and other places, I have read that if you use
an empty adjustment layer with a blending mode change, the file size
will not grow. When I try to do this, my file size grows like with any
other adjustment layer. I open a new adjustment layer (usually curve)
and OK it without any changes made. At this point, the file size has
grown. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks,
Peter

Peter, I've just started reading Diallo's book but I tried your description
of the procedure > new layer > new blending mode > twice! >< and in my case
the PSD image didn't change size. Started out at 284 megs and after 2
additional adjustment layers with different blending curves on each and the
results is still 284 megs.

Sorry, don't know what we're doing differently but something is different.

Alan

Re: [Digital BW] Layers and BLending Modes

Alan and Tyler,

Thanks for the replies. I am still befuddled by this. On most of my
files (all tiffs) when I add an adjustment layer it increases the
file size by about 3x. I am not using masks on these file. If I
delete the mask from the channels tab, the file size goes down a bit,
but not to the original file size. Every once and a while I'll try it
on a different file and it works fine. This is using the exact same
procedure. I have tried using the adjustment layer icon on the layer
tab and the add layer from the menu. No difference. I'm sure I am
just doing something stupid, but can't figure out what.

Thanks again for any help.

Re: Layers and BLending Modes

Peter, sorry but I confess to being befuddled as well.
My file size does not increase until pixel info is added to the mask.
I'll keep my eye on it for a while to see if some situation chenges
that behavior, but a quick test just confirmed it, both 8 and 16 bit.

RE: [Digital BW] Layers and BLending Modes

Peter,

I think the misunderstanding may be that you are referring to TIF files and
Alan was talking about PSD files. They act differently. I just confirmed
this with my own files. I've been experimenting with QTR and have some
images in both TIF and PSD formats. I used the same image and added an
adjustment layer using both formats. The TIF file did increase in size
almost 3 times, but the PSD file stayed the same size. I used the same
procedure and adjustment layer on both file formats.

Re: Layers and BLending Modes

You probably already know this but it makes a difference if you have
"Maximize PSD Compatibility" set. If it is set, whenever you have a layered
file, it saves the layered file and also a flattened version of the file. So
if you have a flat file and add one adjustment layer, that in itself adds
almost nothing to the files size, but the added flattened file will
approximately double the file size. If you add a third adjustment layer the
size will hardly change at all.
