Touch-up pen for matte paper flakes? Is there such a thing?

Touch-up pen for matte paper flakes? Is there such a thing?

2007-08-07 by sagaface

Like a bozo, I didn't take the time to wipe down the paper before printing, and now I have
glaring white spots where the paper has flaked....damn HPR!

Anyone have suggestions for a way to touch these areas up?

thanks,
Sarah

Open your maintenance tank, use some "wet" ink from there, take a
very small brush, 00000, and test on a waste piece of HPR until you
have the matched density, then spot it like a silver print. Good to
keep some waste ink around in a film can for future uses.

I use Spotpens, but Mark's suggestion is brilliant and deceptively
obvious...

I use Windsor Newton watercolor pigments custom blended and a good red
sable #1 brush. Build it up gradually, in very light layers, and use
tiny dots, not big blobs of wet ink. Mark does have the best idea for
black and white, and much color, use some of that ink Epson forces us
to waste. Which reminds me, if I don't empty that waste tank I'm going
to have plenty on my floor next week to mop up. I always let it go too
far.

Hi Sarah:

Here's a quick way to deal with this issue. You can cut and paste the
areas that have spots onto a new 8.5x11 sheet and stick a few pieces
of clear cellophane tape in the areas where the printer will apply
the ink. I would not use too many pieces of tape (maybe 3-5 spaced
out on the sheet).

You can also get a full sheet the same size as your print and spot
apply the cellophane tape, print and apply from there, but that seems
like a waste.

After making a print (using the same settings as your original), just
dab on the ink that is sitting on the clear plastic with a small
brush like an artist uses a palette. I think that you'll find the
color match to be much better that way.

Although the tape idea is one that I came up with, I learned this
general touch up tip from someone on one of the fine Yahoo forums
(maybe this one) a few years back. He or she used a plastic sheet to
print on (such the uncoated back of a piece of inkjet-compatible film).

Hope that works for you.

All the best,

Andrew Darlow

I don't know what I'd do w/o this forum....it's just great to get a variety of suggestions to
any given query....thanks all of you.

Given the simplicity, the fact I printed using Eboni ink only and the number of prints to
correct...I'm going to try your waste ink approach, Mark. I think you might have just saved
me a bucket of money...I'm crossing my fingers I won't have to re-print. HPR 13X19 is
expensive! Learned my lesson on the wipe-down, that's for sure. Yikes.

Thanks again to all!!!
Sarah

John,
What, no waste bypass tube installed? I have not looked in my
maintenance tank in over 2 1/2 years. I wonder what is in there?

Hi Sarah,

An easy way is to print a step wedge on a piece of glossy paper. The ink
doesn't bond tightly and can be lifted with a damp spotting brush and
then applied to the areas of the print that need spotting. The main
advantage of this approach is that it gives you 21 steps of gray so
matching the flaked area is fairly easy. Also, you can put the wedge
aside when you are finished and use it again when needed. It's a bit
like using a ceramic dish with the old spot tone dyes without the manual
mixing.

I know. I keep forgetting your bottle and tube approach. I need to do
that with all my printers so I never have to think about it again. Can
you tell me why Epson didn't think of that?

They did (sort of), an Epson tech told me how to do it years ago
starting with the 9000.

I'm sure they did, and some bean counter suggested that they could get
MORE MONEY with the tanks. Why do you think they have the chips on them.

Mark, for the chipped tank printers do you just leave a tank in and reset the chip when
prompted?

Yes sir. I have lost track how many times I have done the resets over
the years.
