Swapping MIS & Epson OEM on r220?

Swapping MIS & Epson OEM on r220?

2007-08-31 by chriskjezp

Currently I have the MIS UTR2 inks in my 220. I've got the Epson OEM
color cartridges that came with the 220, and I'd like to install them
to see how the 220 handles color prints. I never tested this when I
got the printer, because I pretty much bought it with the intention of
dedicating it to B&W.

Now I'm considering a 2400 or 1800, but before I do that I'd like to
see what kind of results I can get in color on the 220. What I'm
wondering is whether I need to use cleaning carts from MIS before
putting in the OEM cartridges? I've never swapped cartridges like
this before.

I was researching the K7 inks and I noticed they say it's not
necessary to flush in between swaps, and that it's possible to simply
take the K7s out and put the color ones in. Is this unique to the K7s
or also true with MIS UTR2?

Thanks.

Epson OEM inks for R220 are dye based, while MIS inks are pigment
based. I don't know if that makes a difference.

I seldom us cleaning carts when swapping inks. MIS and Epson pigments
appear to be compatible.

Is this true even when I'm swapping MIS UTR2 B&W inks for Epson COLOR
inks?

You're right. The dyes do raise one issue. I've found Eboni doesn't mix
well with dyes. There is so little in the head, it'll be all blown out by
the normal cleaning cycle that happens when inks are changed. However, what
I found in the days of the 1280 is that residual dye on the parking pad
would, apparently, cause the Eboni to form clumps that then stuck onto the
head. These caused minor but nuisance clogs. What I found worked was to
rinse the parking pad with Windex (or probably even water) to get the dye
off of it and stop the Eboni from mixing with it.

Yes, about the only time I use cleaning fluid is for storage and when there
is a clog that does not clear in a couple cleaning cycles - which doesn't
happen much.
