Yes, you are trying to do the impossible by making your 1280 print
onto the last half inch or so of your fine art paper stock. It's just
not in the realistic design parameters of that printer.

1/8 inch (3-4mm) or so of the end of the sheet. Recently, particularly

the paper, and going out of registration in the image area.

Thanks guys. I'm happy to know that I can stop worrying about it, and just work around it. Is there any folk wisdom out there about how close one can safely get to the bottom margin on that printer?

Sounds like the head is hitting the paper. Try bending the corners slightly and see if that helps.

I never had a problem printing the last half inch with any of my printers,
including the 1280, until I started using Silver Rag (very thick, very
stiff) in my 2400. Then someone, I believe on this list, suggested to
someone else, bending back the trailing left corner of the paper. If you
give this a try, bend it only very slightly or you're likely to get another
head strike in a different place.

Yes ... Letter size is a pain in the neck for 35mm aspect ratio cameras. A4 is so much better.

I use roll paper and cut it off at 210mm wide - which makes it 329mm long.

That way you have lots for the printer to grab and you can cut off the long end afterwards.

Ah, well that explains perhaps what I was observing. I never had an issue until I went with the thicker stock. Having thought it was a curl causing the head strike, I went with a bit of reverse curl. As you point out could happen, I got a worse strike in a slightly different place. Guess I was just not subtle enough in my manipulations.

You may want to try taping a 2-inch piece of a thinner but stiff media
at the trailing end. This helps hold the trailing end down as it
advances past the rear set of wheels.

Another thing you might want to try first is raising the front exit
tray sufficiently to help the rear end stay down.
