Breathing Color Optica

2007-10-01 by john dean

Did anyone receive a promotional phone call like I did from Breathing
Color recently? They practically begged me to try their new Optica
smooth art paper. Bright white( but with no obas??, their secret
forumula, uh huh). I was about to hang up on them when the salesman
told me the dmax was overwhelmingly superior to Photorag that it made
dmax on pr look grey. They had this in develoment for years, etc. He
said the Optica dmax was at leat 2.4 with Ultrachrome pigments. Now
this is just a matte paper mind you with MK so it got my attention.

Well I bought the 17" sample roll and when linearized with Studio
Print and NK6 Piezo the dmax is 1.61 at best. I get 1.67 with Photorag
and these inks. With Ultrachrome K2 MK I have a 1.59.

Either these guys are lying to the dmax or I am not approaching this
media correctly. I linearize with these inksets every couple of weeks
so I certainly don't know what else to do with it. Crane made this
kind of exagerated claim too last year but at least they were close to PR.

By the way. Their scientific graphs also show their papers and Crane
Museo as having the least amount of mottle of any of the leading fine
art papers. If you belive that I have a bridge in Alaska that I'll
sell you cheap.

Now I remain open minded and have certainly made mistakes before but
I'd like some comparitive data about this.

I have one that goes from Anchorage to Juno in less than 2 1/2 hours.

What's the courier charge to New Zealand? I've always wanted to own a bridge.

I don't know about this particular paper, but I called Breathing Color,
asking if I can get some sample sheets of some of their matte papers,
and they said no. I have an Epson 2400, so I'm not interested in a role
of paper that I've never tested. I thought this was pretty odd, as most
paper companies make sample packs readily available.

Best, David.

Breathing Color does list samples of all of their papers, allegedly at
"cost." Here's Optica:

Evidently nothing for little desktop machines.

Oh I don't mind paying the $25.00 for the 17" roll, that's reasonable,
as long as the dmax is in the realm of 2.4 ;-) and makes Photorag look
"gray" in comparision. Maybe you guys can let me know what the K3
looks, like. I can't see how that could change things though since
we're dealing with the same MK.

When I think "samples" I think of a package of a few sheets of each
paper or something similar, which is what most companies and
distributors do. I've had a few just send me a few sheets to try out.

Not these folk; they instead want me to pay money based on their
advertising claims. A roll of untested paper for 25 bucks is not a
sample to me. It means I'd have to pay 100.00 just to 'sample' there
fine art papers, for rolls of paper that don't fit my printer, so they
are leaving out much of their potential market.

Not.
