Piezo MIS Comparison

I thought I might take a moment and add my observations to the Piezo- MIS comparison data. Paul and I have finished the MIS Variable Tone warm curve for the Epson 7000. I then printed an image that I made a month ago in my studio with Polaroid Type 55 P/N film. The image is of a Calla Lilly against a white background with very diffuse north light. This is a very delicate image and the highlights and midtones are very important. The first thing I noticed and this si not bad, is that the Cone RIP is compressing the shadows. That is there is not as much separation between the 100%-95%-90% patches as there is in Roarks curve. This results is a less dense shadow and much more shadow detail being present. I think that the Piezo driver may do this to punch up the blacks. I work very hard on my images to open up the shadow detail, and this may be a fine way to help dense contrasty shadow areas. Looking at the Piezo and Vari-tone prints side by side, one would be hard pressed to tell them apart. Mike
