colour space for working on a monochrome print

Hi Group, Just wondering if there is a preferred colour space to use when converting to B+W? I think each has it's own gamma but I'm not real clear on any of this. I'm working on a Mac as well, at 1.8, so does that play into it? Thoughts? Cheers, Jason
