Hi Dennis:

The 5500 is an excellent printer, especially if you plan to do a lot of
printing. The black only printing quality is also excellent, though the
black ink does suffer from some metamarism.

That being said, the Epson 1280 with either a quad tone set (see
MISsupply.com (quadtone section)) or using the black only setting with the
Epson color pigments at 2880 (make sure the heads are well aligned on the
paper you plan to use) is a much less expensive alternative with the ability
to do longer than 19" printing.

Mediastreet.com's new Generations5 is very attractive for the ability to do
black only and color printing, especially on matte coated watercolor papers.
I thought that the price for the Niagara/CIS and 4oz bottles of 6 color inks
was very reasonable ($294).

Here are some links, as it is rather difficult to find this just by visiting
the site as a newcomer:

MediaStreet.com's Gen5:

Just as an aside, I'm really curious how the black ink only from the 1280
using gen5 looks on glossy/semigloss papers.

All the best!

Andy

I haven't tried gen5 yet, but from talking with their rep the black ink is
the one color which still has some ruboff on glossy media. Their advice is
to try to use a RIP to run some composite black (CMY) in with your pure
black to help "encapsulate" the K ink.

And I'm curios to hear if there is bronzing with these inks on (semi) glossy
papers.

Hi Todd:

My advice was based on samples done with a test file(friend's 1160) that I
use and I was quite impressed with the color intensity and the strong yellow.

However, I didn't like the ink refraction in the darkest patches on Epson
Semigloss. That being said, I think that a good test of a dozen or so medias
will yield a good paper. I just haven't installed them to try. I expect to
know within 3 weeks and I'll report back.

All the best!
