Use MIS UT2 inks in the Epson 4000?

Use MIS UT2 inks in the Epson 4000?

2008-07-14 by JensGerbitz

Hi there,

I have an Epson 1280 for which I bought pint bottles of the MIS UT2
ink. Unfortunately, the 1280 seems to be on its last legs and I've
still got a ton of UT2 ink left.

In the meantime, I've been looking at getting a used Epson 4000, and
am wondering if it's pure folly to use the UT2 ink (or at least some
of them) in my 'new-used' printer. I have access to a spectrophotometer.

Thanks,
Jens

UT2 on a 4000 would work if QTR was used. The UT7 for those K2
printers was close to UT2 aside from the switch in the channels used
for carbon v. toner, and the LK (which is slightly neutralized in UT7)
was not used in UT2.

Paul,
Thanks for your answer.... How about the 3800? Would UT2 work with QTR?

Also, on an unrelated note, how well do Piezography & MIS inks get
along chemically speaking? IOW, how well do the lines, printheads et
al have to be cleaned before switching between systems to avoid some
sort of a super-clot (if that's even an issue)? Is it completely
unrealistic to consider switching back and forth a few times to test
the systems on the same printer?

Thanks again,
Jens

Jens,

While QTR is what I'd recommend if one tries to use QTR on either a
2k or k3 printer, I don't recommend UT2 for the 3800. I don't
recommend any blended ink for a printer with large-format type carts.

By "blended ink" I mean a pigment ink that has more than one pigment
type mixed in a single ink. My experience with MIS blended inks in
my 7500 indicates that they tend to separate, causing tone shifts.
See page 4 of http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/4K+.pdf
Note that with desktop printers where the carts are agitated
regularly this is not a problem. The 3800, however, has large format
type carts that are not continually agitated.

I don't know.
