Scanner for Film (35mm)

Should I jump for a scanner?
if so, which one for a film (35mm)

Running Vista OS,
would be doing batch jobs...

Suggest Nikon Coolscan 5000ED with Vuescan for the driver (skip Nikon Scan).
I've been doing small batch runs (all my negs are cut), both color and BW,
with this combo, on Vista, with considerable success (and big scans for
individual negs also with success).

Took me a while to figure out the best Vuescan settings for the batch scans.
Send me an email if you want detailed suggestions.

what about silverfast? how does it compare with vuescan?

Which scanner for 35mm?

The top of the line Nikon seems to be favored by people who can afford
it.

I can't, so I use a Canon F4000US, which works well (with Vuescan,
especially), but is pretty slow.

I haven't seen any careful tests of the Plustec OpticFilm 7200,
although they seem to make other interesting and competent non-film
scanners. (I have their book scanner.) 7200 dpi is tempting,
although the claimed dMax of 3.3 is suspiciously low.

My guess is that most scanners lose resolution and/or contrast because
of the lenses they use, so I tend to be a bit suspicious of scanners
from companies without a decent track record in optics. The CCD's may
be fine "off the shelf", but the optics for high resolution probably
aren't.

It's a lot more expensive! I've never tried it - anyone have a reason why
for 35mm negs, bw and color, batch and individual careful scans, it is worth
it?

Silverfast is absolutely top-notch. I tried both (you can download a trial version to test after you get you scanner). However, as already pointed out, it is a lot more expensive. Vuescan is very good as well. The Silverfast interface is, from my point of view, a little more complicated than it should be. That may be a result of the cultural differences between Germany (the Silverfast country of origin) and the US. I think that you need to be a little more technically minded to take full advantage of Silverfast. That said, if you are technically savvy or, patient, it is not an impossible interface to master. Both softwares will do a credible job but Silverfast is a little better with truly problem B&W negatives and, color negs (IMO).

If I were you, I'd make my decision about a scanner and then try both Silverfast and Vuescan. Did anyone mention the new flatbed from Microtek? It's gotten great reviews for its' film scanning capabilities. Also, Silverfast comes packaged with this scanner. Hope this helps.
