Hi to all

Hi to all

2008-08-05 by XVT XVT

Hello to all,

My name is Tom von Agner (Tom). I am an armature photographer living in
Brazil.

For a long time I had a B&W wet lab and working with alternative photography
(Bromoil and Gum) and only about 3 or 4 years ago I went to digital.

Now I am considering to buy a printer for B&W and Color, I know that this
question must always come up, but could someone give me an indication of a
printer around the $500.00 price rage?

Thanks for the help.

Best regards to all,
Tom

One of the best printers for doing both color and very fine BW is the
Epson 2400 and it's brand new successor the 2880. The 2880 costs
$799, but 2400s are selling cheaper now, and refurb 2400s are probably
under $500. I'm sure someone else will come in here with some exact
prices.

What makes the 2400 a great printer is it's combination of K3 pigment
inks (excellent fade resistance, three shades of gray, and works great
on matte and glossy papers) and the software driver which has an
Advanced Black and White mode (ABW), which is a built in basic RIP
that eliminates the need for extra software for doing BW. Everything
you need out of the box, easy to use, and great results.

Article #9 at the link below outlines an easy workflow for BW printing
with ABW. It will give a good idea what it's like to use one.

Regards,
Clayton

Definitely go with the 2400 if you have the money.

I would also like to vouch for the Epson 1400 13"x19" (Right now it's
$199 after rebates at the Epson store and Staples....in fact I just
bought my second 1400 yesterday and threw in a $40 off $300 coupon. I
had to spend another $50 to use it so I got a 4gb compact flash and a
2gb flash drive for about $10 more)

Add to that a good CIS bulk ink system. $50- $150 (I got a empty $50
ebay one that's working great...but I did have to change the tubing
routing differently)

And then a good B&W inkset. $100- $200 (I paid #100 for a set of six
4oz)

There's $350 to $500 total.

I got the UT14 inkset from MIS (inksupply.com) developed by Paul Roarke
here on the forums.

Astounding inkset/printer combo.

Does matte and glossy.

Sorry, I didn't catch that you said... B&W AND Color.
Go with the 2400
....or buy two Epson 1400's like me. One for color and one B&W. Color
is not as archival as the 2400 but the B&W will definitely hold it's
own.

Thanks guys, for the tips.

I am thinking of buying the R2880, I think it will be better to save up for
a little longer and get a top product.

I have another (probably dumb question) With the R2880 is it possible to use
PiezoTone inks or the MIS Inks?
Will i need a specific resetting software for the cartridges or should I use
a bulk system?

Thanks very much,
Tom

If you want to use either the Piezotone or MIS inks I'd suggest looking at
an older printer. It generally takes a while before anyone has compatible
cartridges/CIS for a new printer. Why not look for a 2400 or even better
for Piezo K6 a 1400?
