Extra Paper Needs a New Home
2008-08-05 by Clayton Jones
Hello All, Since my only BO printer died last fall I've settled in on the 2400/K3 as my sole printing platform. As a result, I have some paper that was my favorite for Eboni BO but I no longer use for K3 prints. Enough time has gone by now that I'm sure I'll be staying with K3 and I've decided to let go of these papers and find a new home for them. These are unopened boxes of 8.5 x 11 sheets of Hawk Mountain's Merlin Smooth (the original really good stuff, not available any more - see description below) and Condor BW. Anyone who is doing Eboni-based printing, especially Paul Roark's new Ebony-only methods, will find these papers to be among the very best there is (especially among the limited choices for cool tone or neutral prints). These are both cool toned and simply gorgeous. Here are descriptions: 2 Boxes, 50 sheets each, Condor BW This is one of the very best and popular papers for Eboni-based printing. Really gorgeous stuff, 2-sided, cold toned. A description and specs can be found in my Great Paper Chase article here http://www.cjcom.net/articles/digiprn5a.htm#Condor%20BW and the Hawk Mtn web site here http://www.hawkmtnartpapers.com/condor.htm -------------------------------------------------------------- 3 Boxes, 50 sheets each, Merlin Smooth There's a story behind this paper. This is the original Merlin Smooth, which has a unique contrast curve that produces especially beautiful midtones and excellent dmax. It also produces (with Eboni) a cool tone on a slightly warm paper color, making an especially beautiful print. There was nothing else like it and it was my favorite paper for a long time. There is a reference to it in the description of Peregrine Smooth in the Great Paper Chase article http://www.cjcom.net/articles/digiprn5a.htm#Merlin%20Smooth At one point Hawk Mtn used up their store of certain chemicals for the coating and found that the new batches from their suppliers were different. They did their best to reproduce the coating, but it just wasn't the same. At one point I ordered some and it was different enough that I didn't like it. I contacted Diana York at Hawk Mtn about it, and she went through their entire stock and found the last remaining boxes of the original, which I bought. That was some years ago, and these three boxes are all that remain. They eventually renamed the paper to Peregrine Smooth, and sometime later renamed it again to Merlin Photo, the current name. This can be seen at their web site http://www.hawkmtnartpapers.com/merlin.htm -------------------------------------------------- I will let these go at a good price+shipping. Please contact me by private email if interested. Regards, Clayton Info on black and white digital printing at http://www.cjcom.net/digiprnarts.htm I-Trak 2.1 http://www.cjcom.net/itrak.htm
