getting a good match between monitor and print.

getting a good match between monitor and print.

2008-11-20 by suvaloo

I am fairly new to digital printing. Have an Epson 3800 with ABW mode and an Imac
computer. I am struggling to get a good match between the monitor and the print. The
image is much lighter on screen than what is printed. I am trying to create a dot gain curve
but am not sure if I am doing it correctly. Can anyone tell me in detail how to create the
curve and how to apply it properly. Any other tips on how to get a good match?

There are a number of settings that can affect this. Without all the
details it's hard to know what to suggest. For a good starting place
please see article #9 at the link below. It outlines in detail a
K3/ABW workflow (it's for a 2400 but the basic principles will apply).
It covers some of the approaches to getting a good match and will at
least get you started toward understanding how things work.

Clayton

Suvaloo,

I have written an article on monitor to print matching at the
following link:

http://www.dinagraphics.com/userfiles/Creating%20Monitor%20and%
20Printer%20Profiles.pdf

This article, while not specifically B&W oriented, does cover the
principles of monitor to print matching. It does not discuss dot
gain curves, but does discuss monitor luminance levels, ICC profiles,
etc. Perhaps you will find it helpful.
