noob review re: BO + r280 beginner setup

2008-11-28 by shifty_tdi

I'm interested in exploring inkjet printing for my scanned negs in the
most cost effective manner possible. I've reviewed the Roark and
Jones sites. I was hoping somebody could review my understanding and
planned upgrade path to see if there are any major caveats or gotchas.

1. Purchase refurbed Epson R280
2. Purchase one MIS Eboni cartridge. I'm after cool prints so I'll get
RCC-T0771-K rather than RCN or RCW.
3. Eboni prints on matte paper only.
4. Must print through QTR software for Black Only.
5. I will keep the other 5 epson color cartridges and can print in
color mode using the Epson driver without messing w/ cartridges.

If I don't like the quality of this setup, the next step seems to be
replacing the five color inks cartridges with the 5 black cartridge
set and printing with the Epson driver.

As far as I can tell the initial investment consists of:
1. printer
2. one eboni cartridge
3. matte paper
4. QTR software (if I keep it after the demo period)

To try the 6 black cartridge setup, I would only need to purchase the
5 additional cartridges.

Any glaring errors in my understanding here?

Also, I plan to get some paper samples but I was wondering what the
current best choice might be for a coolish matte paper that is cheap
enough to experiment freely with while I familiarize myself w/ all the
particulars.

Thanks

Actually all the MK carts are the same -- Eboni. It's only the PK
carts that have different mixes of color pigments in them to cool
down the warm carbon.

Eboni, however, is the most neutral matte black you'll probably be
able to find. The paper will affect the tone for Eboni. See the
paper tone information and links in http://www.paulroark.com/BW-
Info/R1800.htm

...

Have fun.

And as a bonus, the R280 is available at the Epson Store (epson.com) for $29.99 right now!
