Eboni 6 / Epson 1400 Beginner Question

Eboni 6 / Epson 1400 Beginner Question

2008-11-30 by geozucco

My first post to this group although I have been learning a lot the
last few months by reading the posts here. I'm just diving into b/w
digital printing after many years of printing my own large format b/w
stuff in my home darkroom. For my first digital setup I decided to go
for an Epson 1400 loaded with MIS Eboni 6 inks.

I've now got the printer and have loaded the inks. All seems to be
working OK - Except - no ink is being put onto the paper while the
printer is printing! There were no instructions of any kind included
with the Eboni 6 inkset, so I am assuming those little colored plastic
tabs on the back of the individual cartridges need to be removed or
moved to another position before the ink can squirt out of the
cartridges? The only previous experience I have with printer cartidges
are the standard Epson product, where one just pushes them into the
slot and begins printing.

Any help for this raw beginner will be much appreciated!

Be sure you've removed the tabs on top of the cartridges that block
the air intakes.

Yes, that's probably the problem.

Thanks Paul,

I removed the little rubber tabs and now the problem is solved.

Now back to reading some of your PDFs on digital printing..........

Rob, don't feel bad....I did the same thing with the MIS carts for my r1800. Felt a little
chagrined but mostly just relieved that the solution was so simple.

welcome, and best of luck with your set-up!
Sarah

Thanks Sarah and Paul for your responses.

OK, now I've got my Epson 1400 printer working with the Eboni 6 inkset and
I'm already getting gorgeous prints. Here are a few more beginner questions:

1) I have decided to continue working with Eboni 6. I bought one pre-filled
cartridge set from MIS and now would like to order either the 4oz or 1 pint
bottles of each ink. About how many cartridge refills would I get from the 4oz
size?

2) Can the cartridges I now have in the printer be refilled, or do I need to
order new "refillable" carts from MIS?

3) Obviously I'll need a syrynge and needle to refill cartridges -
specifically which of each on the MIS site do I need to order?

4) Do I need a Chip Resetter? If so, any particular one or are they all the
same?

5) Are there any good illustrated online tutorials on Cartridge refilling -
suited as much as possible to my particular situation - that anyone can direct
 me to?

Again, thanks for any help.

Rob

The EB6 is prefilled into refillable carts.
But beware - at least a couple of us have ordered prefilled EB6
carts only to find that they were incorrectly filled - instead of
6 different densities of eboni, they had two different tones (warmtone
and cooltone). So when you buy the bulk EB6 the inks will be
different. 4 oz. is quite a lot and I suggest you start there.

Here are the MIS part numbers:
 MIS-NEEDLE
 MIS-SYRINGE
MIS-BADP (this is the bottom fill adapter, for drawing bubbles out
of the exit port if needed)

No, the 1400's cartridges have auto-reset chips. They reset when both
the ink level (as known to the chip - not the actual level!) is low
enough -and- the machine is turned off or the carts removed.

Go to inksupply.com -> Refill kits -> Refill instructions -> Refilling
Epson R260, R380, RX580 Series Cartridges (these are the same basic
type as the 1400's)

Thanks for the warning. I'll keep my eyes open for this possibility. I think
I got lucky in that regard, since the set of prefilled EB6 carts I got seem
to be producing prints exactly as described by Paul Roark in his PDF article
on the subject. In any case, I just ordered the 4 oz size bottles of Eboni 6,
as well as the refill "hardware" you listed.

By the way, is it just me or do others here find the MIS website rather
difficult to navigate? The part numbers and links provided by you and others on
this forum have been quite handy, since I personally have been almost entirely
unable to find any of them by simply navigating the site. The Epson 1400 is
not even listed in the printer choices when one is looking for inks.

<<Go to inksupply.com -> Refill kits -> Refill instructions  -> Refilling

EXACTLY what I was looking for.

Thanks again.

Rob
