OT....Mat Board for Exhibition

OT....Mat Board for Exhibition

2008-12-15 by brouwerkent

I am looking for recommendations for lowest price sources for Archival Mat Board. I have
long know Light Impressions, but in recent research have found that they are not at all
competitive....frankly high high retail.

Also, what are folks liking in terms of brand. I have found that many whites are very cool or
overbrighted. The best I have seen is Rising White...but it is a very pricey board.

Thanks

Phil

Phil,
I just bought some Rising Conservation board from United Manufacturers
for $6.40 32x40. I've found them to be realible and resonable. It's not
the Museum Board, but it's not $18 either. You only have to buy 15
sheets.

"Rising Conservation Board is a non-rag, high alpha content, lignin
free mounting and matting board. Conservation Board is also acid free
and buffered with calcium carbonate."

Hi,
I have now stuck with Alphamat Spanish White for a long time - it's about the same shade as photorag (vellum surface).

Or Crescent Brite White Ragmat - very close to Spanish White.

Hi Phil,

You might consider my company. We carry Bainbridge Alphamat and
Alpharag. I am not familier with Rising White but we have a number of
different whites in the Alphamat and two in Alpharag. In Alpharag
Pearl is the warmer mat but I consider it an offwhite. In the
Alphamat Matte White is pretty white but has a little warmth. We have
double digit discounts at qty 4 and qty 10 for the same size and
color (including custom but you have the change the qty in the cart
to see the new price).

Pre-cut hinged window mats

2009-01-18 by Debbi

I'm looking for an inexpensive source for pre-cut hinged window mats.
I see them at Light Impressions for $15.00 each, but that seems very
high priced.
Thanks for any tips

Debbi,

I see 11 X 14 on 16 X 20 at $ 40.95 for a pack of 5, about half of the Light
Impressions price. That includes backing board and taping. I use the
mat/mount combos, and they're very nice.

Ditto here on Alphamat Spanish White. Been using it for years, it's the
best match I could find for my silver gelatin darkroom prints done
with Ilford MGIV glossy (dried semi-matte on a screen). But now, in
this digital b/w world, it may be too white for some of the non-OBA
papers out there. Don't know... I'm off on another quest, it would appear!

Light Impressions has a pack of 5 hinged, pre-cut mats for $37.95. See

I'm not sure how they compare, but these work for me.

Re: Pre-cut hinged window mats

My frustration with all these pre-cut mats is that I don't want to
lose half an inch in both dimensions of my print. I prefer to show
some of the paper of the photo in the window (say 1/4" all round). So
that means I can buy a pre-cut mat for a 5x7 and use it on a 4x6
print, but none of the other sizes work. Am I really the only person
that wants this? Is everyone else happy to crop the print when they
frame it?

When I went into the framing industry one of the standards I deviated
from was standard openings. I did not like getting a mat for an 8x10
photo that had an opening of 7 1/2 x 9 1/2. Instead my company
standardized on 1/4 inch smaller so 8x10 is 7 3/4 x 9 3/4 so that
only 1/8 inch is covered by the mat. Of course my bigger problem was
that I didn't want to crop 8x12 down to 8x10 or 12x18 down to 11x14
which is the main reason I got into framing. In the case of floating
the image so that nothing is lost you mostly have to go custom but
wholesale mat companies such as mine will cut anything you want.

Cheers,

Off topic?: Photographs for outdoor installation

2009-01-22 by Arthur Fink

I'm working on a proposal for a public art project, that might
include a number of photographs printed 3' x 8' (or maybe 3' x 6')
mounted on a substrate, and mounted on posts in the ground like a
sign. The substrate might be wood or metal. Not sure whether the
prints would be color or black and white.

Have any of you done any such project? Any suggestions on materials,
vendors, possible cost estimates.

My concept is to surround a new school building with images of that
building in various stages of construction (or pre-construction).

Thanks much,

Arthur Fink

Arthur,

3M makes a product called ControlTac, which is a clear peel and stick
material designed for printing billboards, images on the sides of
trucks, etc. It can be B&W or color. If I am not mistaken, they use
solvent based inks. I think they are using 6 or 8 color VuTek inkjet
printers. It is designed to hold up in the environment, and you can
get it laminated for even better protection. Applying the film to the
substrate takes some expertise and practice. I mounted a 4' X 6' foot
print on 1/4" thick paneling and have it hanging in my garage. The
paneling I used was the material they use to build shower stalls, and
the print is adhering to the shiny, white side. It is very permanent.

I only did this once, but the quality was good, especially considering
it was a digital original from a Canon 40D. I got the print from
Calaway Systems in Courtland, Alabama. They do a LOT of this type of
thing for people like FedEx, etc. If you want to talk to an expert
about it, (who is also a rabid color management freak), contact
Richard Brackin at Calaway...robrackn@....

There may be other alternatives that are better, but at least this is
one worth considering.

Regards,

Lou Dina

That is why I started cutting my own mats. I can size as I want, I can
cover 1/8 or 1/4" of mat or expose as desired. I can compose to any
proportion I want. You can get a simple mat cutting set for $50-100
and depending on how many prints you mat, it might pay for itself
fairly quickly and provide the satisfaction of doing it all yourself.
Most art stores carry linen hinge tape that you can use to connect the
mats. Good luck.

You can get such prints made at nearly any decent sign shop these days.
Anyone who does vehicle wraps should be able to help too because they're
using the same stuff. There's no need to seek out a VuTek printer since
many smaller machines are available from all the usual players.
