My gripe with Epson

My gripe with Epson

2008-12-16 by AnnMarie

Well, it's exactly a year ago today that my old R1800's paper feed
mechanism went on the fritz and was not worth repairing. That printer
was only a year old. I purchased the uber-fantastic R2400 immediately
and guess what? A year later on the DATE, I am now having the same
paper feed problem I had with the R1800. I am loading Epson glossy
paper - nothing fancy, and it won't load. Troubleshooting was all
done. I even changed paper, etc. etc.

This now means I will have to dedicate an entire day off with dealing
with Epson's customer service and tech support dept (whom I have many
many an issue with) in hopes they will just give me a replacement. I
have a 2 year extended warranty so they will have to.

And just when I was printing out holiday cards and the last of a body
of work I just concluded..........

Hi Ann Marie:

I'm curious if the feed rollers are not working, or are they just not
grabbing the paper?

The wheels have to be clean for any feeding technique to work. I
usually take a letter-sized sheet of heavy paper (80# cover, or about
250gsm) and spray about a 3 inch wide strip across the 8.5 inch
dimension (toward the middle) with windex, and then run it through
the printer a few times. The pre-feed button (press once to feed, and
once to send it through). That, combined with a little nudge whiie
feeding the paper, should help.

Good luck with it,

Andrew

You have my sympathy! None of my small Epson's since the 2100 have had
reliable paper feed mechanisms. Some have struggled with Rag papers from
day one! My solution was to buy a bigger printer - in my case initially a
4000, but I'd go for a 4800 or 4880 now. You will get a reliable paper feed
with vacuum hold down, a more reliable, serviceable printer and cheaper inks
in larger cartridges into the bargain. Given the much lower OEM ink prices,
let alone the ability to print on larger paper, I don't know why I didn't
do it earlier.

Ann Marie, I feel your pain and am sorry to hear you now have this issue with your 2400.
It's really inexcusable how slipshod the feed mechanism is on these printers. I never had a
problem on my old workhorse, the 2200, which I wish I could still use, but I am hooked on
3mk.

Have you tried cleaning the roller as suggested? Much like Andrew - and many others - I
regularly do, though I use water on a lint-free piece of cloth wrapped around my finger. I
forget which helpful person here recommended that but it does work for a few passes. I
use a lot of heavy matte papers, and even de-flaking them with a soft cloth before
printing doesn't seem to help that much (though it does help keep the ink from flaking off
afterwards.).

I haven't had much luck with epson techs, myself; most people here seem to know Epson
printers better and usually offer better advice. Good luck....I hope you get your
replacement with little trouble.

Sarah

Dear Andrew -

Thank you so much for your advice. It seemed to have worked! I was dreading the idea of
spending my day off on hold with Epson, not to mention the thought of needing a new
printer. In all of the years I have had printers, I never thought of such an obvious fix.

Thank you again, so much!

AnnMarie

Re: [Digital BW] My gripe with Epson

2008-12-18 by Andrew Darlow

Hi AnnMarie:

That's great to hear! The windex trick and the little nudge while
feeding has been a great help to me over the years on all the
printers I've used that feed like the R1800/R2400. I especially like
to use the pre-feed/paper advance button to get the paper in place
before printing. It avoids headaches, but doesn't help much for jobs
with multiple sheets of paper unless you print one at a time.

All the best,

Andrew

My solution was to buy a used 3000. Newer isn't always better.

Gary, my first dedicated B&W printer was a 3000 with an MIS Quadtone
inkset. It produced lovely prints for its time but didn't have the
best paper feed, struggling with the heavier rag papers in much the
same way that the newer, smaller, ones do. I'm much happier with my
4000's with K7 inksets.

Hi, David !! I did really want the old 4000, but the 3000 had to do. It's like feeding a baby and some can get quite good at that : )

Here is a perfect example of Gary's consistent laziness to trim

Gary,

If you aren't a moderator on a 9000+ member list please feel free to go
soak your head before you comment on the "lack of sophistication here."

On the Alt-Photo-List, as one example, consistently failing to trim a
sequence like that would you booted.
