Help with Epson 1280 and UT2 inkset
2008-12-27 by thejokester5521
I'm a newbie to B&W printing, but am comfortable with color printing (calibration, icc softproofing, etc.) I just purchased the MIS UT2 inkset for my Epson 1280 printer, and I think that I must be doing something wrong. The prints that I have made don't have anywhere near the apparent Dmax of the black-only prints using the Epson inks. The print looks very "muddy", although the highlights are certainly more smooth without the ink drops being visible. Here is what I have been doing, and would appreciate any suggestions on ways to improve my prints. I've experiemented with various techniques, none of which seem to work well for me. Using Paul Roark's curves: 1. Lightroom to process raws to B&W 2. Photoshop CS3 in RGB 16 bit 3. Load the curve for Epson Enhanced Matte for the UT-2 neutral 4. I've tried printing directly from photoshop, using no color management. I've tried saving the .psd file and printing from Lightroom with no color management. Should I be printing from a greyscale image? Should I continue with what I'm doing but use the Epson black ink, instead of the Eboni ink? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I just got one of the folios from Lenswork Special Editions, and I am incredibly inspired to try to replicate the richness of those photos. I'm a long way off, but excited! Thanks!
