Epson C86 recognition problem with MIS EZ b/w cartridges

Epson C86 recognition problem with MIS EZ b/w cartridges

2009-02-05 by ak1965@ymail.com

Some time ago I purchased a sealed-in-the-box Epson C86 printer with
an intention to dedicate it for B&W printing. Just hot a set of MIS
EZ B&W cartridges [two black [for glossy and matte paper)+ C + M + Y].
Opened the box, set up the printer, installed the driver from Epson
CD, opened a monochrome file in CS3 ... Ooops! The printer complains
that it can't recognise cartridges and suggests to buy Epson ink.

MIS help desk is already closed. I need to have this print (a
birthday gift!) tomorrow.

Any workaround, folks? Thanks in advance!

Alon

I had the same thing happen with an R220. Try turning it off, unplug it, plug it back in,
restart and see what happens. If it comes back, try ignoring the warning and print
anyways. The R220 warning basically said you were not using Epson ink. The proper
response is, yea...so what;)

If the response is that it can't recognize the cartridge at all (wrong cartridge) it may not
be seated correctly or the cartridges may be in the wrong slots. Remove it and reinstall
and then go through the shutdown, unplug routine.

There have been some occasions with bad chips out of the box from MIS but haven't
heard the complaint for a while.

Good luck.

It could be a few things.

In my R220, the carts don't seat right. I have to shim them with
folded up pieces of paper wedged between the cart and the back tab to
make the chip touch the printer properly- it might take a few tries to
get enough paper for the carts to be recognized.

You can try using a chip resetter on the carts it doesn't recognize.

If that fails you can also swap out chips for new ones or swap chips
off of Epson carts on to your refillable ones.

Good luck!

Many thanks, Robert!Regretfully, all my workarounds (and they included the ones you kindly suggested) failed. Looks to me that either my C86 is DOA or MIS has bad/wrong chips. I'm waiting for MIS help desk response before trying the printer with original Epson colorcartridges that came with it.

Alon,

I had the same problem when installing the carts for my MIS CFS system for the C86.
Follow the directions that come with your MIS kit to the letter. I finally found from MIS
that it was not the installer but something was wrong with the chips on my carts. MIS
quickly sent me a set of chips with replacement instructions and after the install my
printer worked fine.

An important step is to make sure you unplug the printer from the wall when directed to.
The printer will write bad stuff to the chips if you do not do so.

Good luck with it,

Lincoln
