OT - New monitor on the market

OT - New monitor on the market

2009-02-12 by Richard Smallfield

Hi,
in case anyone on a budget is looking for a graphics monitor, this one looks very promising - the Dell UltraSharp 2209WA 22 inch.

It's an e-IPS panel with 178 deg viewing angle and matte surface - I've found nothing comparable in the price range.

Hi Richard-

Not much there-more of an addy than a spec sheet. Why do you think this is
such a good monitor, other than the monitor type?

According to the spec sheet the monitor achieves 83% of CIE1976 color space. If anyone can
chime in and correct my thinking that this spec would be even a smaller percentage of
Adobe RGB 1998 space?

How many adjustments does it have? This is important for calibration.

It's the only monitor on the market in its price range with a 178 deg viewing angle and it has a non-glare surface.

I believe the gamut is not as good as the more expensive ones, but if we are printing primarily Black and White, I think other considerations like viewing angle might be more important.

Some more expensive models, like the Samsung 215TW, which have been well reviewed, have only a 170 deg viewing angle.

Richard -
Can you even discern a difference of 8 degrees in the viewing angles
of two different monitors?

You really should be paying attention to the gamut and tonal
qualities of a monitor. Black & White is just as important
as color gamut, and IMO, a slight difference in viewing angle would
be the least important reason for purchasing a monitor.

Hi Clayton,
the figure of 178 deg was got from this (admittedly brief) article:
http://web.me.com/thecolourlady/CM_Site/Knowledge_files/TPM183_LCDMonitors.pdf

My desire for a wide viewing angle may be exacerbated by the fact that at present I'm working on a laptop PC with no external monitor - so I may have less than a 170 deg viewing angle at present. However, the dedicated graphics monitors seem to be at 178 deg.

>>Can you even discern a difference of 8 degrees in the viewing angles

Yes, especially on wide format monitors. You can look left and right
a relatively larger amount without seeing what appears similar to a
shift in gamma. Same thing for up and down movements of your head.
You will of course eventually move enough to start seeing a shift but
it takes a deliberate shifting of your position. The difference
between a laptop and this monitor should be very satisfying!

This monitor has an amazing price. The one thing I don't know about is
how the E-IPS panel differs from the other flavors of IPS.

Richard, let us know if you get one. I look forward to more
real-world reports on this monitor.

Doug
