rear feeder on Epson 3800

rear feeder on Epson 3800

I give up...

What is the secret to consistent paper feeding from the rear paper feeder on
the 3800?

Was printing some posters tonight on Epson Watercolor paper which requires
the rear (manual) feeder to be used.

I did not get a single sheet to feed correctly the first time with 20
sheets. "Skew errors" mostly.

What gives? As it is working now, it's ridiculous.

Dave.

After over a year of misfeeds on my 2400, I have finally understood what's causing them.
Not sure this will help you, but I'll tell you just in case (and perhaps this will help others --
I can't believe I wasted so much time and irritation figuring this out).

The printer measures the forward edge of the sheet (that is, the edge that enters the
printer first) to make sure the paper is not askew. If the side that is perpendicular to that
(going round anticlockwise) is not perfectly aligned against the guide, the forward edge
will not be parallel to the print head and the sheet will be rejected. What I hadn't realized
was that if the paper is not cut perfectly square, then if the side is aligned, the forward
edge will not be parallel. I cut larger sheets in half (for proof prints), and wasn't cutting
them perfectly square. The solution was to rotate the sheet so that both the forward edge
and the edge against the guide are edges that were cut by the manufacturer.

The same thing applies to pretty much all of the upper model printers
from Epson. You can sometimes turn this feature off in the menus, but
you may also lose the ability to keep from printing off the edge if
you mistakenly tell the printer that the paper is larger than it
really is.

. What is the secret to consistent paper feeding from the rear paper feeder
on
the 3800?....

The secret is to keep gentle even downward pressure on the paper the whole
time from first insertion until the "ready" message appears.

And to make sure the paper width slider is firmly up against the LH side of
the paper while you are pushing it down into the innards. Otherwise you may
get the 'paper skew' error - as I just did.

I would agree with all the comments made here. Just one additional note: I
had, on one or two occasions, found that the sheets cut by the supplier were
not sufficiently orthogonal to the side that I had to trim myself. That,
plus the gentle and constant pressure during feeding worked.

Maybe in the future, Epson can adjust their firmware so it will be smart
enough to accommodate a minor non-orthogonality (is there such a term?) with
the sheets.
