Displaying prints without glass...

Displaying prints without glass...

2009-02-15 by kwalsh74

I'm using one of Paul's 100% carbon printing processes on matte papers
to make prints to decorate the house. Getting decent anti-reflective
glass is very expensive and since the lighting isn't controlled
(mostly windows and such, but no direct sun light) glare is awful
behind glass. So I'm thinking of displaying them framed and matted
without any glass.

Anyone see a major problem with this?

I know this is not archival, but I'd presume I'd change out the prints
every few years anyway.

Hit them with compressed air to get dust off every so often?

Should I spray the prints with something to protect them?

Any advice greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

  Ken

If you are going to change them out when you get tired of them, why
bother with one more step. The inks should last without visible fading
for several years, so I wouldn't worry about it. If one or two fades
too quickly, then you can change the way you are doing things.

If you are not worried about archival then it is not a problem. A
couple other issues you might run into over time is that you may need
to replace the mat every now and then since it may buckle over time
and depending on where you are hanging them you may need to worry
about finger prints. Another option to consider is non-glare glass or
acrylic. It is much less expensive than anti-reflective but it can
cause a slight loss of sharpness (excessive loss of sharpness and
fuzziness if you get a low quality version).

Ken,

I hate putting glass over my photos. For the prints in my house, I just print each image on a standard size sheet of paper (usually 18x24), leaving enough room on the edges to include a really wonderful digital mat effect that I found in Scot Kelby's Photoshop CS3 book. As long as I let the print float in the frame (with a foam core backing board) and not be locked down with pressure from the back side of the print, the print stays relatively flat over time. I do not mind at all a slight wave in my prints because I use Hahnemuhle Bamboo paper. This paper gives me a wonderful sense of a third dimension in the print...thanks to the mat surface and the lack of glass over surface. I hope this helps.
