A question on MIS refill kits

A question on MIS refill kits

2009-07-14 by mike-theprint@waspfactory.org

Hi,

I can't seem to find a nicely-wrapped-up UT14 refill kit for the Epson
1400 on inksupply.com, and they seem to reply to email... Spottily.

So I think I need this:

A set of the UT14 cartridges
(http://www.inksupply.com/inkjet_cartridges.cfm?search_getmodel=512)

Syringes, needles, and bottom fill adapters
(http://www.inksupply.com/refill_cart.cfm?oem_cart=EPS-T0791&printerID=512)

Now I think I need six of these, one for each cart, so I don't have to
worry about cross-contaminating the inks.

And, of course, ink (http://www.inksupply.com/ut14_black_and_white.cfm).

Anything else?

Mike..

I would get the EMPTY 1400 carts, and get the 4oz bottles of each ink..I rinse my syringes out between each lolor filled, and purge them dry..Yo won't NEED the xtra syringes, but they're cheap.

I would also buy and EXTRA set of carts in case you experience an individual cart failure, or just want to be ready to print again ASAP..It's a GREAT system!

I haven't done any serious digital printing before, let alone with
third-party inks, so I thought buying a first set of factory-filled
cartridges would minimize my chances to screw up.

Sure, it's a bit more expensive upfront, but not radically so, and it's
a tiny sum in the long term.

I don't understand "purge them dry" - could you explain?

I guess plain water will rinse the syringe sufficiently.

Yeah, that also occurred to me - I thought I'd buy the filled set
initially, then another set of empty carts. But I guess I might as well
get 'em all together.

The one thing I've seen destroy others efforts using the refillable carts is to not keep everything clean. Even if you use seperate syringes for each color you need to keep them perfectly clean. So, cleaning and reusing the same syringe for all the colors does not increase your workload.
Cleaning under a small flow of tap water and a few pumps on the syringe to completely dry it will do the trick.
I use the MIS carts on three different printers.

I would suggest you try OCP German inks. I have a great success with them in my R1800

Re: [Digital BW] A question on MIS refill kits

Mike..

I have warm tap water in a quart container in my sink..I purge any residual ink of EACH color back into its bottle, and then I "pump" the syringe 3-4 times full of the warm water and finally keep pumping it out of the water, until nothing more sprays out..
If you don't buy the 4 oz bottles, you will go through those initial carts very quickly..Make sure to do nozzle checks and download MIS's purge pattern for 6 color printers..I haven't had much clogging with this printer, but the more frequently you use it, the less chance you will end up with a clog..ANY gaps in your nozzle checks will give you banding at the very least..You will need to do one or two cleaning cycles..Also make sure that on your "initial" cart filling, you suck out approx 1cc from the exit port(s) of each one of the carts using the "bottom-fill" adapter(rinsing your syringe out after each color of course!). This will help prevent getting an "air-lock" at start-up, which you will THINK is a clog..Good luck and have fun!

Ok, I see.

*nod* It seems like the best bet is to get a set of pre-filled carts, a
set of bottled inks, and a couple sets of syringe+needle+adapter. I
guess there's not much reason not to throw in a set of refill-friendly
carts and a resetter, too.

Great, thanks for the advice!

*nod* A good observation. I'll try to be scrupulous :)

From the OCP website, it seems the 1400 inks are still under
development. But I'll keep it in mind if I find I want to switch from
the MIS inks.

  Good Morning MIKE..
You don't need a re-setter with these chips..They are "auto-resetting"...Also, Im not exactly sure if their pre-filled carts are re-fillable..They probably are, but it's best to confirm that with MIS..

Re: [Digital BW] A question on MIS refill kits

If you get the prefilled carts you can refill them once they are out of ink. I'd get a few extras for when they go bad.

I do recommend separate syringes for each color and I don't bother wash them after use. I also return any extra ink to the bottle, air pump any ink left in the syringe into a trashcan, wipe them off with a paper towel and put the syringes back in a box.
The less water pollution the better.

Roger
