Hahnemuhle options

Hahnemuhle options

2009-07-18 by Tyler Boley

Due to Hahnemuhle's impending price hike, I'm curious of other here have come across papers with similar characteristics of HPR, Germans Etching, and William Turner.

One I can recommend as an HPR type alternative is Generations Alise Fine Art Paper.
http://www.premierimagingproducts.com/pg_alisefineart.php

Surface is nice, seems more robust than HPR, there is a natural and a bright white. Dmax with Epson MK ink is higher than HPR, and the gamut quite comparable, though with a RIP limits have to be handled carefully. With Jon Cone's inks dmax was a hair lower than HPR, but still up over 6, depending on setup.

Any other input would be great, thanks.

I really like Canson Rag Photographique, which is similar to HPR.
Photographique is the sharpest matte paper I've ever used. I'm getting a
Dmax of 1.63 with a custom Cone curve and K7 Special Edition inks. The paper
has a nice weight and is reasonably priced.

I'm also using Canson BFK Rives. It is slightly warmer, and has a very nice,
yet subtle, texture. Dmax with Cone curve and K7 is 1.59.

Canson also makes an etching paper, along with a number of other textured
offerings.

I've also started using Photographique--a beautiful paper, but I'm not
seeing the similarity to HPR. To my eye Photographique is much whiter
(no OBAs) and a bit softer . . . I'm using the K7 SE too. Guess I'll
look into purchasing a custom curve.

Yes, their other papers are also quite nice but very expensive.

Hey Gang

Yes Hahnemuhle is having an increase! That's for sure.. I see All types
of crazy stuff.. Big Flat Sheets Up So Much I cant even describe..I am
still trying to figure it out myself..

A 24 x 39 roll of HPR 308 is rising by 15 dollars If I remember correct.
But a 44 inch roll is only like 8.. while 8.5 x 11 sheets went down..
This is the most insANE THING I HAVE EVER SEEN..

No I just want you all to remember one thing Hahnemuhle is a 39' foot
roll while Innova ( act is way better than 2 yrs ago) Museo & Canson all
are 50" feet

As a general broadcast if you want to go over your product either email
or call me and you know I do my best for you guys & Gals...( some free
samples If Needed as Long as some pays shipping- Sheet Or two)

To me this is puzzling for sure just like it must be for all of you..
Not to mention way to much work!

Thanks Again to all of my awesome customers!~

Cheers

Several years ago there was a Red River paper that was similar to German Etching, but I don't remember the name or if it is still around.

Jimmy,

We're all going to be using you forever no matter what they do because you are the man and keep up with it all!

If 44" Photorag rolls are only going up 8 that is nothing and certainly not worth fussing about here. I guess they are trying to discourage sheets altogether. But your right Crane, Innova etc are giving 10 more feet per roll so all that has to be considered along with consistency from batch to batch.

With K7 I'm seeing dmax of 1.67 for Prag. With the Z3100 it is 1.8 and 2.38 for the PRag Baryta. I don't know why Canson is charging so much for BFK. Maybe people have never seen it before. It used to be the basic paper for silk screen etc. I can't imagine it being more desirable than William Turner or Museum Etching with that dmax.

Not an exact knock-off by any means, but the closest that Canson has.
Perhaps they took some liberties in the play on words in the name. ;-)

I have been really pleased with the custom Cone curve.

Terry.

Jim,
Are the HP branded Hmule prices going up too? If not, that may be an
option for customers who can use 42 inch rolls. HPSmooth FA= PR and
the HPTextured FA I believe is either German Etching or WT.

Guys, you've peaked my interest in Canson Rag Photographique (310), but I am
disappointed to find that its 30 - 50% MORE expensive than HPR (308) here in
UK. Mike

Re: [Digital BW] Hahnemuhle options

2009-07-21 by Michael King

Ok I got some Canson Rag Photographique (CRP), hoping it would be whiter
than HPR, and give me a somewhat different look - but it does neither.

Here is some real data (I wish all manufacturers would publish this info).

Canson Lab paper white 97.69 0.15 0.89
HPR Lab paper white
   97.53 0.63 0.01

Canson is bit smoother and a tiny bit yellower as the 'b' measure shows.

Profiling with K7 standard inks it gives a truely linear density curve with
the HPR K7 Cone curve for my R1900 printer. As straight as the HPR one is.
They both achieve L17 dmax (approx 1.64). In fact if it wasn't for the 'ab'
difference at the paper white end of the curve I would have been worried I'd
somehow printed on HPR by mistake. Below about L60 their 'ab' curves using
Neutral/Sepia split are basically identical.

I've printed a couple of prints on CRP and I can't tell them apart from HPR.
So at least for some inks I would say HPR and CRP are totally
interchangeable - except in price here in UK where as I mentioned before CRP
is 30 - 50% more expensive.

As I try the paper with other inks I'll provide an update.

Mike

Hahnemuhle Baryta pricing

2009-07-25 by Pacific New Media

I wonder what kind of price is a good price for Hahnemuhle Baryta. It
seems at most popular mail order places the sheet paper is more than $2
per square foot, and roll paper is around $1.75 per sqft. Anyone find a
better price for this fine art inkjet paper?

I've found Shades Of Paper to have a good price point on this paper. It comes to
about the same price per 44" roll as regular Photorag 308. And that is with the
new Hahnemuhle price increase.
