4880 black in swap hack for 4800

4880 black in swap hack for 4800

2009-07-26 by danielstaver

I've just received my 4800 printer with photo black installed. The prints on glossy are great, but of course the black ink swapping issue is there as now I'd like to make some matte prints.

I found this article on how to swap the black inks with much less waste:
http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/article_pages/printer/4880_swap_black_ink.html

Did any of you try it in a 4800?

Hoe many pages of black did you need to print to clear out the old ink?

I guess I'll just go ahead and try it and see what happens...

I'd be interested in how you get on.

As for how much, it should be quite noticeable when the ink changes.
The suggestion to print a series of known sized squares is a good one.

"The amount of ink required to purge the old black depends on your
printer.
The SP7880 uses about 10-12ml of ink before the tube is flushed out.

Printing a solid black image of 17"x30" should suffice.

For Mk -> Pk: When you look at the finished print you see that it
starts with matte ink as it looks dark and the rest of the print looks
a little dull with Pk ink on matt paper. The system is now charged
with photo black."

"On our 9600 we printed four 40"x10" solid black rectangles on cheap
matt paper to purge the black line. The first 3 were a dark black and
the third much lighter as the Photo black ink was used."

I guess the 7880 has longer tubes, so less should be required for the 4800. I'll try and post back when I have a result. I will probably print A4 sheets of office paper since that's the only low cost paper I have available.

Dividing the A4 print into 3 blocks will help you fine tune how much
to print. I need to purge my magenta channels after putting in vivid
carts and so I am interested in your results for that reason also.

I just tried it. Unfortunately three cartridges were empty and had to be replaced during the procedure, and after switching on the last time after switching carts, it went into ink charging mode. So I probably wasted more ink than during a normal swap, since I didn't use the conversion kit.

Oh well.. I'll try it again when I want to swap back to Photo Black and make sure none of the cartridges are nearly empty, and use the stage 4 reset from the 7880 page like they warn you might have to do http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/article_pages/printer/7880-9880_swap_black_ink.html

I got the printer with over a full set of extra carts, so at least I have plenty of ink to spare for now.

The whole procedure in total took 15 minutes. 4 minutes for changing black carts and making the menu settings, the rest for suddenly having to change color carts and then doing the ink charging.

I've got a 4800 in excellent condition for sale. My solution was to have 2
machines, one for PK and 1 for MK. I have since bought a 4880, so I don't
need the PK 4800.
$800 and no more swapping inks.

Thanks! But the shipping cost to Norway would probably kill me financially, and my wife would kill me physically if I put another 4800 into our home. I'm already surprised that she let me put this one into our bedroom - and so is she I think. She was shocked when she saw the size of the thing. "I didn't realize it would be that big!" (Normally that would be a good compliment to get...)
