Printing with UT-1400

Printing with UT-1400

2010-02-10 by JorgeG

Good morning folks,
I'm ready to see if I can produce some fine prints with my new Epson 1400 and the UT-14 inkset.

I have installed Photoshop CS4 and Quad Tone RIP in my computer. Following Paul Roark's instructions in his article1400 B&W Inset T-14 I was able to print without much difficulty a fairly good print on Epson Enhanced Matte Paper. Then, I tried to print BO using the Quad Tone RIP software and the same Enhanced Matte paper, but my results were totally different. I got a pretty flat print.

I download Paul Roark's 1400 Profiles and installed them in C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\color

I need some help and I have some questions. With QTR, can I only print BO? Isn't any way I can use all my inks as I do when I print with the Epson driver and Photoshop?

Where do you install the curves that come with Paul Roark's Profiles 1400?

I would like to find a good quality paper. Any recommendations?

Thank you very much for your help.

Jorge

You probably used the wrong profile.

Also, QTR prints will often look light compared to what you're used to because it uses a strictly linear response curve. If you have your Photoshop CS4 gray working space (Edit > Color Settings) set to Gray Gamma 2.2, I have a curve that I apply (can be a layer) just for printing that adjusts the print densities so that they'll match the monitor view of a Gray Gamma 2.2 gray working space. The curve is in the profiles zip and is explained in the UT14 PDF.

See page 4 of http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/Making_B-W_ICCs-GrayCard.pdf for the locations of ICCs in many popular OSs.

> ... With QTR, can I only print BO?

No, you can make your own full inkset profiles also. There are quite a few UT14 QTR users who will probably share their profiles. You might want to join the QTR forum at http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/QuadtoneRIP/

> Where do you install the curves that come with Paul Roark's Profiles 1400?

The QTR profiles, in Windoew, are in a 1400-MIS folder under C:\Program Files\QuadToneRIP\Profiles. Once you place the profiles there, you need to open them in QTR's Curve Creator and save them. That generates the *.quad files that QTR then actually uses.

It's often best to start with papers for which there are profiles.

Good luck with the B&W.

Eddie,

Thank you very much for your recommendation. I'll go to redriverpaper website and check it out. With the "AURORA FINE ART NATURAL" paper do you use the Epson driver or QuadToneRip?

Regards,

Jorge

Hi Paul,

Thank you very much for your input. Very helpful.

I'm reading and digesting the UT14 document and the QTR manual. I'll see if any of the UT14 QTR users are willing to share some of their profiles.

Regards,

jg
