modular concepts. . .

2002-03-23 by electricbeats_eof

Thank's to all of you for your replies...
Gan't get enough opinions and tips on that subject at this stage...

I hope I won't gettin myself unpopular on this forum too much from the verry
start, joe, if so please tell me... ;-)

I realize that this is a forum emphasized on doepfer a100, still it is the only one
I found where the matter of modular synths are discussed, and since theres
been a lot of replys posted, i can see that theres people here that are willing
and happy to give advice... thank's again, it helps so much to get that BEFORE
you invest soul, time and money without having experience in that field.
Btw, good to see that people from doepfer are participating but not are
moderating in a dominant way as in so many other forums . . .

A vs. VA:
It has to be in the analogue environment tho, because analogue is the most
direct way to interfear with sound structures and physics.
I do effect preset design for EVENTIDE inc. foor their DSP machines which
are fully modular as well - you can patch and define everything from single
knobs as interface to math modules that process your audio signals - almost
everything is possible in a more basic way than even the nord mod. (their
keyboards are one of the best I've ever tried). The problem with VA is that the
subtle colours in sound are quasi nonexistent since every signal is going thru
the same D/A section. I consider this as 'the' major drawback on sound if you
want ot create and not 'just' process or conserve.

Doepfer, ASol., etc....
I'm sure I will end up getting some of the doepfers VCO's at some stage since
they have their own sound, it's just not the sound that I go for at the moment,
but what a great advantage to get a module for ca. 100 euros that will give it to
me when I feel I need it...
In a few weeks I hope I can start of with a basic configuration and I will keep
you guys informed and I hope to get some interesting patches to share since
at the end of the day a LFO is an LFO and can do the same no matter which
brand it is...

To Andreas:
A136 will be added to my list - if it givesonly half of the results that I can
imagine it being capable of just from reading the manual it's gonna be verry i
n t e r e s t i g ... :)
MIDI-CV...
I spoke to Tom Carpenter from A/Sol. and he pointed out that the main focus
of their CV-MIDI converter is on sequencing (e.g. no pitch bend)... That's why
for me it's no option since I want to use it live and having aces to as many
MIDI controllers as possible. Why do you think it's better than the 191?

To Kris:
Thank's for the practical tip on the spacing, if you could supply me with some
wiring diagrams that would be awesome... you can do this off list if noone else
needs them ..

thanx to all of you, you gave me a good start...
