Re: [Doepfer_a100] sequencer questions

2007-06-12 by charles kerr

Hi Pierre,

I don't have either of those sequencers, but there are other alternatives; Analogue Systems do a quite nice sequencer, as do Analogue Solutions. Analogue Solutions do the Oberkorn which seems pretty highly spec'd, and they talk a bit about audio freq stuff on their site (and it's 16 steps), I have several of their small 8 step gate and CV seq's and these are great, cheap and fun if you will. I'd certainly check them out before deciding on any. The Doepfer one looks pretty cool and I intend to get one of them at some point, looks pretty good with the added controller.

  Just my tuppence worth!

          Hi all,

I've always been tempted to add a sequencer to my modular and have a few
questions. I'm not really interested in using it to sequence notes but I am
very interested in the modulation possibilities it affords. Aside from the
obvious stuff, I've seen it mentioned that it could be used as a graphic
vco. How would you do this? As I understand it the sequencer advances one
step for each incoming trigger it receives. If you sent an audio rate
signal, it would take eight cycles of that signal to replay the whole
'waveshape' drawn by the knobs. So there'd always be an eightfold frequency
discrepancy between the incoming and outgoing signals. Correct? Or am I
completely off the mark here?

I see that it is possible to use it as a multi-stage envelope via the a154,
but is it possible to do this without an a154 using other modules?

Finally, there seem to be only two possibilities available in eurorack
format: the a155 and the upcoming planb model21. I realise that the planb
model doesn't exist yet, but assuming that it did, what are the advantages
of the a155 over the model21? I've read through all the docs on both models
but since I've never used a sequencer like this, I don't have a real sense
of how significant the differences between them are in any practical sense.
I only have room for one of these and because of where I live can't easily
resell modules so I'd very much like to avoid making a mistake. I suppose
people will say that it depends on what I want to use it for, but the
problem I have is that I don't know exactly what I'd use it for. My natural
inclination is to say that I'd mainly like to use it to sequence
modulations, but I have this weird feeling that I might end using the
trigger functionality a lot more than I intended...

thanks in advance,

rgds

Pierre
