In my experience they're noisy.  I don't remember it distorting the
audio passing through though, and if you're dealing with loud sounds
it may not matter, especially if they're in a chain before a filter or
other audio-processing module, but if you were to use one on an output
you'd hear a door open to a hazy world.  Which isn't always bad.
