Doepfer

Hi

As an owner of both Analogue Systems and Doepfer 
modulars I would say that there are a few 
differences that you might consider:

Space - you can fit more Doepfer modules into a 
rack, and there are more Doepfer modules that 
have duplicate functions in one small space such 
as the Dual VCA, Quad ADSR etc. Useful for 
touring or just saving money on base units or 
saving space in the studio.

Doepfer also have more utility modules available 
which are REALLY useful such as the VC switch, 
Dual Logic Module, Comparator  etc.

In some cases I would say that the AS modules, 
although they perhaps have fewer features, 
sometimes do what they do better than the Doepfer 
modules - I prefer the AS VCA for example, and I 
have a feeling that the S&H module generally 
behaves better on the AS than the Doepfer.

It depends on what you intend to use the system 
for in that because the AS modules are wider, 
they allow for easier access to the knobs for 
performance purposes. The colour coded knobs also 
help in this respect but only slightly.

The AS case can be ordered with a Doepfer bus 
board to accommodate both manufacturers modules, 
however, a feature not present in the AS case is 
the CV and Gate bus connection. On the Doepfer, 
if you buy the Bus Access module, this allows 
control over the CV of all the oscillators and 
all the ADSRs (A-141 with a simple mod) from one 
socket without using several patch cords.

There are other differences but aside from the 
practical stuff above there is no shortcut to 
deciding with your own ears which combination of 
modules produces the kind of sounds and textures 
that you are after.

I would recommend buying a smallish system to 
begin with, get used to it, and then add odd 
modules as and when you need them - this way 
you'll realise what features you absolutely must 
have and what you can live without. I can almost 
guarantee that you'll end up with your own 
personal mixture of modules from different 
manufacturers, and that will contribute to your 
own personal sound.
