Hi

thanks Ilanode, but actually this kind of quasi ring mod AM is exactly 
what I don't want. I want to accurately translate the amplitude envelope 
from one sound to another.

Allen Strange's book led me to believe an AC capable VCA could do this 
for me - as an alternative to a complex envelope detector setup, but 
when i try I get exactly what you describe - AM distortion, or worse. So 
either i misunderstood him completely or my VCAs (analogue systems rs180 
and plan b LPG)are not AC coupled in the sense that he meant?
