I keep the tank external too - lets me play the spring itself too but 
it doesn't always cut the hum. At least you can move it around and 
make it better. I keep meaning to install some RCA sockets to a small 
panel but it's OK for now.

One word of caution - as Dieter has mentioned, be careful about 
powering up with the tank unplugged and the leads just floating as 
this may be catastrophic for the module if the leads short.
